Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise” has officially screened the Venice Film Festival. The reactions I’ve gathered from four colleagues thus far are mixed, but let’s just wait and see what published reviews will be saying. The reviews on Letterboxd are all over the place. UPDATE: The embargo has lifted. The reviews are mixed, but the love/hate reaction that was expected is most definitely there. A 69 on Metacritic based on 13 reviews. Variety has the headline, Noah Baumbach’s Netflix-backed “White Noise” starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig was met with a tepid 150-second standing ovation, a short smattering of applause on the Lido. The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Vanity Fair, Collider, The Wrap, and The Daily Beast are either mixed or negative. Whereas, The Film Stage, AwardsWatch IndieWire are politely positive. Meanwhile, the raves are coming from the UK, who are a little kinder to the film with The Guardian, BBC, Screen Daily and The Times all giving the film its best reviews. Did we expect anything else? A $100+ million adaptation of a very difficult novel to adapt. Something tells me I’ll very much like “White Noise,” but I won’t be seeing it until the end of the month. Contribute Hire me
