Variety‘s Dave NcNary is now reporting that the film’s distributor, Annapurna, has, yet again, bumped the release date of ‘Bernadette’ from March 19th to now an August 9th slot. This is the fourth release-date adjustment for Linklater’s film (5.11.18, then 10.19.18, and then again to 3.22.19 and finally today’s new 8.9.19 slot). An Annapurna rep told McNary “that August has served well as a launching pad for release of female-skewing films such as Crazy Rich Asians, Florence Foster Jenkins and Julie and Julia." I agree with that assessment, it does strike me as the kind of film that could benefit from an end of summer release, but August doesn’t spell Oscar, Annapurna seems to be rather going for for ‘Bernadette’ to be a slight crowd-pleaser that could make anywhere between $60-70 domestically, if they’re lucky.
