It’s not like he’s stopping either, the 75-year-old director just premiered “The Fabelmans,” the most personal movie of his career, to overwhelmingly positive reviews and a Toronto audience award to boot. Now, it’s become the current frontrunner to win the Best Picture Oscar. This comes after another critically-acclaimed film, 2021’s “West Side Story,” which itself was a seven-time Oscar nominee. Suffice to say, there was no shortage of films to choose from when I asked 85 critics to submit what they considered to be the five best films of Spielberg’s career. Not receiving a single vote from any of the 85 participants were “Hook, “The Lost World,” “Amistad,” Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” “War Horse,” and “The BFG.” The biggest surprise is the sudden reappraisal of his 2001 sci-fi film “AI: Artificial Intelligence.” Impressively finishing in sixth place, the film was met with mixed reviews upon its release, but has gained a massive amount of critical support in the 20 years since. Of note, only film critic Jordan Cronk voted for Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” which has only been screened, so far, at the Toronto International Film Festival. I would imagine more than a few people would have voted for that film if they had seen it advance of this poll’s publishing.
