Studios are said to be very reluctant in sending out their talent to the prestigious Colorado-set film festival, which is supposed to launch during the final days of August. We already know that TIFF will have an abbreviated version of their festival in September, with just a 50-film lineup, but Telluride is a very different event, one which usually has its 30-something film lineup filled to the brink with world premieres of Oscar contenders....

Spielberg became a better, more refined, filmmaker as he aged into his 60s. The craft and masterful storytelling between 1998 and 2005 (“Saving Private Ryan,” “Minority Report,” “AI,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Munich,” and “War of the Worlds”) at times exceeded his, mostly brilliant, but inconsistent work from the ’70s and ’80s. There’s real excitement to the filmmaking in those films, and a lot of creative risk-taking. It’s also the phase with the most pleasurable filmmaking from Spielberg, with masterful use of color and framing....

We had no idea when Spike Lee’s next film, “Da 5 Bloods,” would be released, all we knew was that shooting had wrapped and the film was all but in the can and ready to go. Ang Lee’s Gemini Man doesn’t look like a festival movie to me. And so, that leaves us with Soderbergh which is a no-brainer for Venice, but maybe TIFF snatched that one up for themselves, who knows....

That’s the only possible explanation I can come up with for the temper tantrum Lee threw right after “Green Book” won the Oscar. Lee has a right to voice his opinion, I just think he comes off as being rude by insulting someone else’s work in that manner. The Oscars don’t dictate what is the best in cinema, just be a good sport about it, you’re allowed to be pissed off but keep it to yourself or say it in a way that isn’t blatantly rude....

I’ve seen around a dozen films so far and the best ones are James Gray’s “Armageddon Time,” Ruben Ostlund’s “Truangle of Sadness,” and Cristi Mungiu’s “R.M.N.” Non-competition titles have been fairly lukewarm as well. There’s nothing that I seen that would have merited a complete slot, so Fremaux isn’t really to blame. It just seems as though Fremaux really opened the vault of riches last year with his stacked pandemic edition that there wasn’t as much to choose from this year....

Regarding his influences for the film, Cooper said: “I was so influenced early on by the work of John Carpenter, like “Halloween,” or certainly “The Exorcist” which is a favorite of mine, or even Tarkovsky’s “Stalker.” So I’m able to bring all of that into one film which is exciting.” Cooper has never made a “horror” movie, which is what this new film seems to be. It will be interesting to see what he does with the genre....

A person who attended the screening on Thursday night was mixed-to-positive about the film [via Data Lounge]“Aaron Sorkin’s Lucy/Desi biopic. Nichole Kidman is really, really good as Lucille Ball. It’s a subtle performance I could not have imagined her doing, and she NAILS it. I had no idea how she (or anyone) could pull off the ’50s Lucy voice, but she did. Javier Bardem is good as Desi Arnaz, but way miscast....
