Virtual reality has been a popular trope in movies and TV shows since the 1990s. The technology showed up in several movies, playing an important role in the plot. That until 2018, when it finally became the protagonist in a blockbuster. Let’s review some of the movies where virtual reality plays a (more or less) important role. Another week and another place at number one for Disney’s Saga ending “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”. Taking $33.7M domestically and $50.5M internationally, the JJ Abrams-directed end to the Skywalker saga now sits at $918.8M worldwide. Next week will see it break the billion-dollar barrier as it becomes Disney’s seventh 2019 film to reach that landmark, all whilst continuing to hunt down the $1.3B of 2017’s “The Last Jedi”....

Deadline is reporting that California’s latest protocols state that theaters can begin reopening under strict guidelines on June 12. Counties could still overrule the state-wide mandates, but this is a positive development for those who are hungry to go back to watching films in darkened rooms. The catch, those aforementioned strict guidelines, is that they won’t reopen at full capacity. The guidelines claim that screenings can only operate at 25% capacity....

There was the usual fawning, this time from Elle Fanning saying she “was shocked and couldn’t believe she was chosen to be part of the jury,” even mentioning how it feels cyclical to have Inarritu as the president, considering he cast 7-year-old her as Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett’s daughter in ”Babel.” Inarritu, on the other hand, said he didn’t feel comfortable being President, considering he was never in charge of anything in his life, not even in his own movie sets or family home....

The trade has made the claim that after a contentious interview with Frémaux, they were asked to remove content including potentially uncomfortable answers relating to diversity and controversial filmmakers. Among the sections that were later watered down by the press department was a response to a question about whether the festival would welcome back Roman Polanski. Wiseman was also asked to remove Frémaux‘s response to a question about the lack of female filmmakers in competition....

Following Diamantino (Carloto Cotta), a Portuguese football star who is all but disgraced by his own country for missing an important penalty kick, directors Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt’s beautifully dreamy original tackles the refugee crisis, genetic modification, neo-fascism, and yes, even giant fluffy puppies in an ambitiously absurdist tale of a guy who is trying to find some kind of redemption. The film opens on a wide lens shot of an unknown galaxy, and a voiceover leads us further back down to earth as a World Cup match that has us watching Diamantino controlling the ball and effortlessly carrying it through the offensive zone....

Alana Haim, Bradley Cooper, and Bennie Safdie will also co-star in the film which currently has the working title “Soggy Bottom” and has been dubbed as a 1970s-set coming-of-age story. As mentioned, Hoffman plays a child actor at the center of multiple storylines set in California’s San Fernando Valley. The younger Hoffman and Haim are both making their respective acting debuts. The divide is apparent: critics are not in-sync with audiences when it comes to “Bohemian Rhapsody.” “Doctor Strange” filmmaker, Scott Derrickson, even went on Twitter to voice his frustration with critics, stating “I really enjoyed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody. Most criticisms I’ve read about the film say it could’ve been something more. But I refuse to judge a film by [what] I wanted it to be, I receive it for what it is....

Reviews for “Amsterdam” are almost universally bad. A 31% on Rotten Tomatoes won’t be bringing asses to seats in theaters, especially for a movie that needed good reviews to succeed. Before the review embargo was lifted, “Amsterdam” was looking at an opening weekend of $17 million to $20 million, according to pre-release tracking. With word-of-mouth now out there, one can imagine the toxic reviews might depress original projections. Maybe Taylor Swift fans will show up, but I don’t think it’ll be a driving factor in overall box-office performance....

“The Irishman” stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. Based on Charles Brandt’s novel “I Hear You Paint Houses,” the film is the story of Frank Sheeran, a man who claimed to have killed fellow Teamster Jimmy Hoffa. “We’ve talked about it with Netflix. They are going to do a presentation of our film the way it should be, in a theater, in certain venues, the best theatrical venues there can be,” De Niro said, adding “How they resolve it is, in the beginning, they will show it on the big screen, we’re talking about big venues where it would play, where it should play, and what happens after that I’m not sure....

Derrickson’s tweet angered critics such as Variety’s Guy Lodge who wrote, “It’s good to review everything on its terms. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t criticize a film for being limited in scope, ambition or courage..If you’re not bothered by the de-queering of Freddie Mercury’s story for mass entertainment purposes, well, great — you are exactly who Bohemian Rhapsody was made for. Enjoy! But also take a moment to consider whether the film should have been made only for you....

Review: ‘Widows’: Steve McQueen takes genre conventions and twists them inside out to messy, glorious effect McQueen spoke to BuzzFeed about the scene, stating that he tried to “amplify a mixed-race couple kissing in a way that their tongues onscreen is the first image. If you saw it in the street you wouldn’t think twice of it but somehow on the big screen it sort of amplifies and magnetizes what that is....

According to Deadline, it will be a 160-minute film arriving in 2021. This film version of “Hamilton,” was recorded with the original cast, two weeks before they went their own ways. Will “Hamilton,” a massive record-breaking hit on Broadway, earn serious cash at the box office? Who knows, since this is a filmed live performance of a Broadway musical. The film is already in the can, so why a late 2021 release?...

“For Sama” has some of the most hard-to-watch footage you will see in any movie this year. A war-torn Syria is immaculately shot by Waad al-Kateab’s phone camera as she explores the intimate and epic journey of her experiences living inside a war zone. Shot through the course of five years, which starts off with the Arab spring uprising of Aleppo, al-Kateab’s Syria remains a magical place for her — so much so that, despite death knocking at her door every day, with hundreds of bombs being dropped by the Russians and Assad regime, she manages to get married and gives birth to Sama, all while the conflict around her intensifies....

What we do know? Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” will become the director’s fourth Best Picture nominee. Netflix will most likely end up with the most number of nominations than any other studio. And “Parasite” will be the first South Korean film nominated for not only International Film, but Best Picture. Much like every year, expect snubs, expect surprises, expect backlash on the lack of inclusivity. I am currently only predicting two people-of-color to crack the acting categories, Lupita Nyong’o for “Us” and Jennifer Lopez for “Hustlers....
