The film was such a bomb with critics and audiences that he would never direct another film again....

I honestly thought Styles’ acting career peaked with “Dunkirk,” albeit he was in that film only for a few minutes and barely spoke a line of dialogue, but that’s how I like “actor” Harry Styles: completely silent and barely there. Regardless, the UK newspaper Express is claiming that Styles is in talks to join the new Christopher Nolan project. Maybe Nolan can find that magic touch to reinvigorate and bring out something, anything, in Styles’ strenuous acting abilities....

Carpenter is telling the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he has a few projects “lined up and percolating” that will involve him flexing his skills as a director, writer and composer. If you remember, at last year’s Cannes, Carpenter admitted that he wanted to “make a little horror film. Detailing specifically what he had in mind, Carpenter said “I’d love to make a little horror film that would be great or a big adventure film....

One tidbit that I found amusing was Carpenter’s total disregard for Ari Aster’s films. The interviewer asked the filmmaker about his thoughts on “elevated horror,” more specifically Ari Aster’s “Midsommar” and “Hereditary”: It’s rather amusing to think that such a well-renowned shapeshifter of the horror genre would have no idea what these movies are. Carpenter is probably more interested in playing his video games these days than keeping up with the current cinema....

It’s been five years since Kathryn Bigelow released “Detroit.” The Oscar-winning filmmaker has finally set up her next feature, titled “Aurora”, and it’ll be a Netflix original. Bigelow’s film is an adaptation of David Koepp’s upcoming novel of the same name, the veteran screenwriter will also write the screenplay for the project. Insiders describe the story as “following characters who are coping with the collapse of the social order, set against a catastrophic worldwide power crisis....

Shyamalan is a brand. His name alone being stamped on a trailer can bring asses to seats. In his latest film, the India-born, Philadelphia-raised filmmaker riffs again on a “Twilight Zone”-like premise. You can hate on the guy all you want, but, at some point, Shyamalan was known as the director who gave us “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable.” As far as I’m concerned, those two films justify his existence in the cinematic realm, but he also peaked with those two releases....

We can now add non-fiction filmmaker Michael Moore to the list of ‘Joker’ fans. The outspoken director wrote an outspoken and passionate defense of the film via a Facebook post on Saturday morning. “The greater danger to society may be if you DON’T go see this movie.” Moore wrote, “Because the story it tells and the issues it raises are so profound, so necessary, that if you look away from the genius of this work of art, you will miss the gift of the mirror it is offering us....

Since its beginnings in 1996, the festival has featured Asian cinema as its core element and this year was no exception. Directed by Gavron (Suffragette), this incisively socio-political film follows its eponymous protagonist, a 15-year-old (Bukky Bakray), living in South London with her single mother and younger brother, Emmanuel (D’angelou Osei Kissiedu). As if their stringent lower-class living environment wasn’t enough, Rocks comes home one day to some cash for groceries and a note from her mom telling her that she left for somewhere undisclosed to “clear her head.” It’s not the first time this has happened, so Rocks shrugs it off by taking care of Emmanuel on her own, making sure they both go to school and get fed....
