I wrote about “Run” on 02.20.20: Sarah Paulson has, surprisingly, never lead a big studio movie until now. Mostly relegated to supporting turns during the course of her 20-year acting career, the immaculately talented Paulson has nevertheless shown greatness in minor but key roles in films such as “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” “Mud,” ‘12 Years A Slave,” and “Carol.” Aneesh Chaganty’s “Run” has Paulson donning villainous shoes for a film which, judging by the trailer alone, looks well-shot....

Back in July of 2020, Annapurna Pictures won an auction and landed the rights to Rachel Yoder’s debut novel, “NightBitch”. The novel was to be developed as a star vehicle for six-time Oscar nominated actress Amy Adams. This past May at Cannes, Searchlight Pictures acquired “NightBitch” from floundering Annapurna, Marielle Heller was also announced as the writer-director. The film’s plot is total dark absurdism. A neo-horror thriller starring Adams as an overworked woman who is convinced she’s turning into a dog....

Leigh has been a consistent figure in the world cinema scene with landmark works such as “Secrets and Lies", “Life is Sweet” and “Naked.” However, the British director has been struggling of late, 2014’s “Mr. Turner,” a biopic of artist J.M.W Turner, barely made any scratch and 2018’s “Peterloo” was famously rejected by Cannes. When asked by Screendaily about receiving awards at festivals, Leigh mentioned the Cannes fiasco, “Everybody knows that Cannes rejected ‘Peterloo....

Last month I reported on how Netflix was going to heavily campaign around Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”. I also wrote that it was their #2 priority of the season, right behind Inarritu’s “Bardo,” and that Baumbach’s “White Noise” was not as prioritized because the streaming giant believed it was “too polarizing.” Maybe now, with Inarritu’s film not going to Toronto and New York, Netflix will push the “Knives Out” sequel hard....

De Niro, Pacino, Harvey Keitel and Joe Pesci will star in the gangster film, based on the book “I Hear You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt and tells the tale of gangster/assassin Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran. I’m getting vibes that it might be the direction SAG goes towards when they announce their Best Actress winner on February 27th: honouring Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta aka Gaga. Whoever wins the SAG Actress trophy will also, consequentially, be the de facto frontrunner in the category. Kristen Stewart was touted as a cinch to win the Oscar by pundits back when “Spencer” world premiered at Venice, TIFF and Telluride in early September....

After “There Will Be Blood” and “The Master” it was quite clear, that PTA was the master of the aughts. By the time “Inherent Vice” was released back in 2014, the Californian stoner movie divided critics and sowed some doubt as to whether PTA still held the throne of best working director alive — don’t worry though, 2017’s “Phantom Thread” reestablished him as the current “great one.” For a while now, we’ve known that PTA was hard at work on a new project....

Almost every studio is skipping the festivals with movies that should have been big priorities. Suffice to say, it’s going to be another eccentric fall season. Yes, Telluride, Toronto and Venice will have strong content to showcase, but the list of movies not showing up anywhere just keeps getting bigger and the big director names are not showing up. In “Support the Girls,” Bujalski focuses on a mere 24 hours in the working life of a Texas sports bar called Double Whammies and the hard-working young female waitresses that work overtime to pay the bills. I won’t lie, the bar is a hooters-type joint where the girls working there have to wear short shorts, crop tops and flirt aplenty with the customers, just for extra tips. Their manager is the unhappily married Lisa (the exceptionally talented Regina Hall), who knows full well the ridiculousness, and sexism, of the job at hand, where “boobs, brews, and big screens” is the motto used to lure in the customer....

Their reasoning behind the Berlin skip is obvious. Polanski, now 89, is still embroiled in allegations of abuse. That’s the reason why experts don’t expect his latest work to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. On top of that, the German paper is implying that negative press is also starting to build up against Polanski in France, where he has been beloved for many years. Judging by Shia LaBoeuf’s letters to Olivia Wilde, obtained by Variety, the actor seems to have found some kind of inner-peace and tranquility after becoming as he says “persona non grata” in Hollywood. Good for him. He’s even converted to Catholicism — whatever gets him off that deep end … I’m sure you’ve heard, but Wilde has been doing the media rounds for “Don’t Worry Darling” and taken the opportunity to lie about firing the originally-cast LaBoeuf....

By all accounts, McGowan is trying to destroy this man’s career. It all started two and a half weeks ago when McGowan tweeted about a sexual misconduct allegation that happened between herself and Payne, who was in his late 20s. McGowan was 15 between September ‘88 and September ‘89, so by her account, the incident happened around 31 or 32 years ago. McGowan swears that the alleged misconduct by Payne was “statutory rape,” claiming he had shown her a softcore Showtime film he’d directed and then had sex with her....

The most remarkable part of this story is undoubtedly the involvement of Ford, who after finally (much to his satisfaction) bowing out of the Star Wars franchise in 2015, seemed unlikely to want to revisit his other career character. Especially considering his last outing, 2008’s “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” did all but kill off Indy as it attempted to pass the torch (and the franchise) to Indy’s son Mutt (Shia LeBeouf)....

Are organizers being stubborn? Don’t get me wrong, I truly hope there will be people on the ground at Sundance. We need some kind of normalcy next year, despite this variant raging all over the country, but I just had a bout with COVID and so have a bunch of friends and family. This latest variant is just going to ravage through the population and, cross your fingers, we’ll build up herd immunity from it and be able to learn to live with the damn thing....

If you remember, Warner Bros. was demonized for announcing that all of its new movies in 2021 would debut simultaneously on HBO Max and “in theaters”. The venerable movie studio was receiving hate from theater operators, major studios and filmmakers, including Christopher Nolan and Denis Villenueve. All of them saying “What gives? Haven’t you heard? A vaccine is coming!” Well, they were wrong. Mass immunization from the vaccine will not be happening anytime soon, and Warner Brothers’s waving the flag on moviegoing for 2021 looks more realistic than ever before....

The Will Smith disbarment, if you want to call it that, seems to be a total and utter performative gesture on the part of the Academy. Sure, Smith deserved some kind of punishment, but a 10-year ban? They couldn’t wait until the inevitable Oprah special aired? After Jada basically backed away from having any responsibility to do with the slap incident, saying that she doesn’t need a man to protect her, and it was her husband’s idea and reaction, Smith supposedly entered rehab for his aggressive behaviour....

Deadline received this statement from Hanks: The contagion seems to have happened on the set of the untitled Elvis movie when a member of the crew tested positive for COVID-19 which consequentially led to everyone else getting tested. Production on the movie has, obviously, been shut down for an undetermined amount of time. Hanks and Wilson are 63 years of age which puts him then the 3.8% mortality age category....

The underwhelming box-office performance of the ultra-feminist and very woke “Terminator: Dark Fate” may very well be reason enough to use that term again. You see, despite the return of producer James Cameron and the reunion of Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the sci-fi action sequel pulled in a horrific $27 million opening weekend on a budget of $185 million (not including another $100 million in marketing costs). According to THR, the movie is projected to lose more than $120 million....
