This will be the first STX movie to ever to open at No. 1 (“Bad Moms” opened at No. 3 in 2016 with a $23.8 million opening). STX picked up “The Upside” only five months ago, from Lantern Entertainment a subsidiary company which was created after The Weinstein Company declared bankruptcy and folded. TWC had originally picked up the film at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September 2017, which is where it had its world premiere....

With that being said, we already got the news today that Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” will most definitely be having its world premiere at Cannes in July and at the New York Film Festival in October. The film also is set to be released Stateside on October 22nd. [via Variety] I can also exclusively report that a very trustworthy source has confirmed to me that Tom McCarthy’s “Stillwater,” starring Matt Damon, has clinched a spot for Cannes 2021....

All five were fairly unexpected surprises. In fact, my jaw dropped at the inclusion of the Saleh, he’s the director of the just-released “The Contractor,” starring Chris Pine. The other notable film he’s directed is the Sundance-winning “The Nile Hilton Incident,” which was pretty underwhelming. There were also titles that were very much in the running for competition, but are now “free agents.” They can either go to one of the sidebars (Directors Fortnight, Critics’ Week) or be late additions to the Cannes Film Festival....

This release is a huge gamble for Nolan, the WB, and cinema in general — will people show up to watch a movie in the dark, with hundreds of strangers around them and a no-mask policy to boot? That’s the big question we’ve been asking ourselves for months now and we will finally be getting an answer to it in late August. I’m all set to watch “Tenet” sometime next week, the embargo is, understandably, very specific and strict — I’ll have to be, mostly, cryptic from here on in....

The last film Aronofsky directed was the polarizing “Mother!” back in 2017. His rumored return to small-scale filmmaking, with “The Whale,” would mean something along the lines of “Black Swan,” “Requiem For A Dream,” The Wrestler,” and his 1998 debut film “Pi.” According to DiscussionFilm, “The Whale” stars Brendan Fraser as a 600-hundred-pound recluse hiding away from the world and slowly eating himself to death. Talk about an insane concept....

The International Film committee shortlist usually consists of 9-10 films. However, this year, the Academy decided to expand the shortlist to 15 films, all done through popular vote, which now almost doubles the number of selections up for consideration. This decision was made with just three weeks left in voting and has let numerous country’s film committees scrambling to amp up their FYC campaigns. To make matters even more unpredictable, due to the fact that the Cannes Film Festival ended up not happening last year, the 2021 International Film Oscar race is one of the most fascinating in years....

Puiu’s latest, the philosophical historical drama “Malmkrog,” goes even further, running a staggering 200 minutes. However, a recent screening of the film turned some heads, as Puiui, while presenting it at the Transylvania International Film Festival, wasn’t shy in showing his distaste at wearing a mask while watching his 3-hour movie. During his intro, Puiu went as far as to call enforced mask-wearing policies “inhuman” and launched into a speech stating that, while the virus is real, the “tone of the authorities is unacceptable....

With that being said, this year’s official selection was bound to be a more low-key affair, especially due to the fact that the Cannes Film Festival decided to expand its official competition to 25 films and even added a “world premiere” sidebar for the films not in competition. What Moretti was basically left with, and the biggest world premiere he could snag, was Joanna Hogg‘s “The Souvenir Part II,” the sequel to her British coming-of-age drama starring Tilda Swinton and daughter Honor Swinton Byrne....

Empire is reporting that Wright, speaking exclusively to the magazine, will be venturing away from comedy and more towards psychological horror-thriller territory, in a film that will be set in London and starring a female lead. Wright cites classics such as “Don’t Look Now,” and “Repulsion” as major influences on the upcoming film. “I realized I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years,” Wright told Empire....

The excellentDavid Simon-HBO show “The Deuce,” which has had plenty of sex and nudity, especially since it deals with the beginning of the hardcore porn industry in 70s and 80s NYC, went through a bit of controversy this past year when its actress, the lovely Emily Meade, told Rolling Stone that she felt rather uncomfortable doing some of the sex scenes on the show: “Despite the fact that Meade had been doing sex scenes since she was 16 years old, they still had the power to make her feel uneasy....

An air of deception loomed vast and wide this season, as the Roy family, a clan of clandestine one-percenters, had to maneuver through issues that managed to feel both relatable and completely distanced from a country slowly losing its grip on reality via media propaganda. McKay delivered individualized episodes, which heavily relied on confined spaces, each building upon the myth-making in this story of greed and deceit. And yet, like the very best of The Bard’s genius, every character was given his and her time to evolve in fully-fleshed ways, to the point where sympathy came calling for the viewer....

If you remember, Kent had recently complained about the lack of female directors in competition at this year’s fest, “I think it’s an issue,” Kent said. “I hoped there would be more. I really did.” She added, “There are some incredible women out there making films, and we need to see them, and they need to be in festivals, A-list festivals, and have the opportunity that men are having. All I can do from my perspective is keep making films, no matter how hard it is....

“I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscars,” he wrote on Twitter. “This is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. Forbes let it slip that Assayas is teaming up with Kristen Stewart for their third feature film. They had previously, and successfully collaborated on “Clouds of Sils Maria” and “Personal Shopper.” K-Stew also recently appeared in an episode of “Irma Vep.” Assayas is going back to his muse, Stewart, it was inevitable, they are a great actress/director combo. There is no word yet on the plot of this new movie nor when it is actually going to be shooting, but we clearly know they have the ball rolling....
