If director Steve McQueen’s film is not nominated for Best Picture, it won’t be because it’s an action film, a genre the Academy tends to ignore much like sci-fi. No, “Widows” is not an “action” movie; It’s an arty-cool, distancing film that is more about build-up than tany actual heist. McQueen’s film has none of the high-tension, octane-driven action that the trailer hinted at, it plays more like a snail-paced, character-driven drama than anything else....

For the last two years, Johnson has basically been on the receiving end of a backlash from “Star Wars” fans because of their passionate ire towards “The Last Jedi.” Johnson’s creative decisions pleased film critics, but hardcore Star Wars loyalists despised the fresh new direction Johnson took with the “Last Jedi.” There was no catering to fans and the director says it would have been a mistake to do the opposite and abide by fan theories and philosophies....

Variety‘s Dave NcNary is now reporting that the film’s distributor, Annapurna, has, yet again, bumped the release date of ‘Bernadette’ from March 19th to now an August 9th slot. This is the fourth release-date adjustment for Linklater’s film (5.11.18, then 10.19.18, and then again to 3.22.19 and finally today’s new 8.9.19 slot). An Annapurna rep told McNary “that August has served well as a launching pad for release of female-skewing films such as Crazy Rich Asians, Florence Foster Jenkins and Julie and Julia....

What The Northman lacks is the artful ambiguity of Eggers’ first two films, The Witchand The Lighthouse. The influence of studio notes is apparent throughout. But it’s not that much of a slog, and despite a little too much CG with a climax happening at the mouth of an active volcano, two naked men fighting, not the best endin, Hollywood doesn’t really make epics of this kind anymore. You can tell Eggers wanted a more elevated, visually-driven movie but the reshoots made it more ‘entertaining....

Unless you think Dan Gilroy fits into that category. If that’s your thing then the biggies this year are Gilroy reuniting with his “Nightcrawler” star Jake Gyllenhaal for “Velvet Buzzsaw,” there’s also director Gavin Hood’s UK/US intelligence community indictment “Official Secrets,” and screenwriter extraordinaire Scott Z....

The general consensus is that there was one episode in which everything changed, and that was “The Principal And The Pauper,” (Season 9) where we learn that Principal Skinner isn’t actually Principal Skinner at all, but is actually an impostor, completely rewriting years and years of back-story for characters we’ve known and loved. Others believe it was the Frank Grimesepisode. in Season 8, that was the beginning of the end....

Wilde is clearly going for a social commentary here. With a “Stepford Wives” vibe added for good measure. Harry Styles, Wilde’s real-life partner, looks miscast. Chris Pine playing the bad guy feels like a fresh look for him. Wilde raised some eyebrows at CinemaCon by comparing her film to “Inception”, “The Matrix” and “The Truman Show.” Talk about raising expectations. However, if you have read the screenplay, which has been on the famous Hollywood blacklist for a few years now, then you “get” why Wilde would compare “Don’t Worry Darling” to those films....

There’s also no “Don’t Worry Darling,” Olivia Wilde’s follow-up to her debut “Booksmart,” which was said to not be chosen due to a conflict of interest? From Deadline: Instead, TIFF will have to settle with nabbing hot titles like Florian Zeller’s “The Son,” Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” Peter Farrelly’s “The Greatest Beer Run,” Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light,” Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse,” Joanna Hogg’s “The Eternal Daughter,” Jafar Panahi’s “No Bears,” Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild,” Sebastian Lelio’s “The Wonder,” and Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking....

Storyline Gardner Ross is a Canadian investment bank that faces big competition from other banks on the global marketplace. The story begins when the initial public offering is gone missing and senior partner Cedric Ross is jailed after that. He fears that his partner Adam Cunningham will take advantage of his absence to agree to a friendly takeover by a larger bank, this is why he calls on his only child, Sally, to take care of the bank while he is absent....

“Bones and All” is loved by The Telegraph. Also, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw has given it another 5/5 perfect score, his third of the fest so far. THR is fairly high on it as well. Total Film gives it 4/5. Screen Daily likes it. Other raves include freelancers for The Playlist and IndieWire. The BBC is conservative with a 3/5. Ditto Collider with its B- grade. The negative takes include Vanity Fair, and Variety....

We’re now left with 17 orphaned titles that were supposed to premiere in 2022, and whose current status is currently unknown. I’m hoping Toronto and/or Telluride add William Oldroyd’s “Eileen” to their lineups, I’m not so sure about the others. We might just have to —very soon— relegate them to our 2023 list. I’ve heard good things about Corey Finley’s “Landscape with invisible Hand,” and for sure thought a TIFF bow could occur, alas, it’s looking less and less likely....

“Joker” doesn’t count, and that’s really been the only above-average one. I guess parts of “Wonder Woman,” “Man of Steel,” and “Shazam” worked, but I wouldn’t ever consider them to be good movies. Otherwise, I hated “Aquaman,” “Wonder Woman 1984”, “Birds of Prey”, “Justice League”, “Batman v Superman”, and “Suicide Squad.” With that in mind, James Gunn castrating the DCEU is not all that surprising. I know there are fans out there who grew attached to these characters, and the actors playing them, but the cold hard truth is that fans have been fed mediocre movie after mediocre movie these last 10 years....

Starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the recently released third chapter is set to open with a strong $68.4 million at the weekend box-office, making it the second-best MLK weekend of all time (‘American Sniper’ is still tops), but also the highest opening-weekend in ‘Bad Boys’ franchise history. Reviews have actually been more positive than expected for “Bad Boys for Life,” with a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes. I have yet to see it, foolishly, or lazily, skipping this past Tuesday’s press screening....
