After “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” was screened, barely anybody was really buzzing about Bassett’s performance as Queen Ramonda. Now we have three influential pundits predicting her to not only get nominated, but, quite possibly, to win the Oscar?! Fat chance. As respected as Bassett is in the industry, her film is not universally liked and the Academy nominating a performance from a Marvel movie seems a little too far-fetched for my liking....

Kiang’s review has a note saying that she saw “A Rainy Day in New York” on Sunday, 8.25 at Cinema City Kinepolis entertainment plexes in Poznan, Poland. Allen’s latest will be released in most big Euro countries, with the exceptions of the UK and Germany — both of which also happen to be the biggest and most liberal-heavy supporters of the #MeToo movement in the U.S. No, ‘Rainy Day’ may very well never be released in the States due to the chaotic political hysteria currently inflicting the country, but Allen may very well be innocent of the crimes he is being accused of, with many just not wanting to do the research or going with the #MeToo narrative of always believing the victim....

I usually try to avoid midnight screenings given the fact that I do very early screenings the next morning. This lineup looks decent enough. I’ll be marking down “Pearl,” “The Al Yankovich Story” and “The Blackening.” Meanwhile, the Wavelengths and Discovery lineups have also been announced....

Minority Report is definitely peak action Cruise. Playing John Anderton, a futuristic agent who (thanks to new technology) can catch murderers before they have committed the act, finds himself on the run following a video showing a future version of himself shooting someone. Fast-paced, and with that electrifying Spielberg buzz, Cruise, much like in the ‘Mission’ franchise, is the action-packed heartbeat that gets the blood pumping in this Sci-Fi classic....

Obviously, my sarcasm was quite telling in the post, and I was frankly pessimistic that Obama had actually seen all these films. A backlash to Obama’s list, surprisingly, did occur in the process, with people agreeing with my “algorithm theory.” Of note is Owen Gleiberman’s takedown essay titled “What Barack Obama’s Year-End Movie List Reveals About Him." Gleiberman’s article was met with divisiveness; after all, he basically makes the case that Obama’s picks (safe, conforming and un-risky) were very much aligned with his Presidency....

This will be the first time in five years that an A24 title has been in Venice competition. The last time was 2017’s “Lean on Pete” (good movie). There’s been a bit of a dispute between Venice/A24 these past few years, I’m not entirely sure why, but Venice boss Alberto Barbera let it slip in 2019 that he really wanted Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” and that A24 wouldn’t budge. Meanwhile, Aronofsky will yet again compete at Venice in September, this will mark the fifth of his last six movies to have its world premiere at the Venezia....

The Italian news agency ANSA (via Variety) spoke to the president of the Venice Film Festiva, Roberto Cicutto and, much like Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux, he seems convinced that Venice will be able to happen in early September. However, although Fremaux hinted at it, Cicutto is not entirely open at creating a collaborative effort with Cannes. The Venice president went on to state that there is absolutely “no hypothesis” for a Cannes/Venice team-up....

However, some good news for Woody, Deadline is reporting that “Rainy Day in New York” will be the opening night film at the Deauville Film Festival, just a couple of weeks before it arrives in French cinemas. The film opened in Poland on 7.26. Subsequent bookings include Lithuania (8.2), Greece (8.22), the Netherlands (8.29), Turkey (8.30), France (9.18), Czech Republic (9.26), Italy (10.3), Spain (10.4) and Mexico (10.25). Of course, Germany still has no date… The festival kicks off on September 6, with “A Rainy Day in New York” screening at the festival....

A trailer for Forster’s film has been rated and will probably be released next week. There’s no point in discounting it just because it’s a remake of Hannes Holms 2015 Swedish film. Forster’s film credits include “Finding Neverland,” “World War Z,” “Monster’s Ball” and “Stranger Than Fiction.” Set for a December 14th release, Forster’s remake has Hanks’ Otto forced to retire from his job of nearly 40 years after his wife dies....

It turned out that the film’s shelving had to do with tax returns. That’s right, Variety’s reporting that Warner Bros. scrapped “Batgirl” not just because they didn’t like it, but because it made sense from a tax write-down standpoint, scared the bejesus out of creatives in Tinseltown. Apparently the tax returns will allow them to make their budget back if they don’t release it. This tax return default could very well be something other studios copy in the future....

What exactly has Ari Aster created here? The film sounds unique, dreamy, surreal and unexplainable. Oh, and it stars the ever-fascinating Joaquin Phoenix, an actor whose unpredictability, on and off the screen, has turned him into one of the most important actors of the 21st century. If anyone is going, you know how to contact me. Of course, with Mendes you just never know what you’re going to get. The British filmmaker does tend to hit the mark with critics more so than not (“American Beauty,” “Skyfall,” “Road to Perdition,” “1917”). He’s also had his fair share of duds (“Spectre,” “Jarhead,” “Away We Go”). Something tells me “Empire of Light” will belong in the former category....

Not hard to believe since the heat is currently scorching over there. Extras were warned about signing onto the production and having to work for 12 hours under the sun. Amidst all this chaos comes the news that “Ferrari” has been given a fall 2023 release date. This fits perfectly with a Venice Festival premiere. The film is said to be epic in scope, recounting a single year (1957) in the life of Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) and his wife Laura (Cruz)....

“Flee,” which was supposed to have premiered at Cannes last year, plays as a sort of therapy session as Amin lies down on the director’s couch and recounts his story from childhood to adulthood, from Afghanistan to Norway. There is clearly lots of trauma, inner demons, that Amin seems reluctant to reveal, even Amin’s partner, Kasper, and his longtime friend, the director, have not known about his past until now....

Anderson’s film is set in a fictional French town (Ennui-sur-Blasé) and the magazine within it is called The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun. The film will use the death of that magazine’s editor (Bill Murray) as a catalyst for the journalists to look back and share stories about his life. Could the film also be seen as a tribute to Bill Murray? Anderson has decided to explore several different time periods with the help of a cast that includes, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Benicio Del Toro, Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody, Léa Seydoux, Tilda Swinton, Mathieu Amalric, Lyna Khoudri, Stephen Park, Elisabeth Moss, Saoirse Ronan, Owen Wilson, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, Jason Schwartzman, Henry Winkler, Bill Murray and many more....
