Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast this past week, Howard looked back on ‘Solo’ movie and the mixed reception, both at the box office and with fans. Howard is a fan of the film he made and believes trolls destroyed its reputation: Howard also claims that many supposed Star Wars fans are nothing more than ‘tagalongs,’ waiting to see what the zeitgeist says before having an actual opinion on the movies: “I’m proud of #SoloAStarWarsStory and the cast & crew worked hard to give fans a fun new addition,” he tweeted when a fan asked if the backlash that stemmed from “The last Jedi” was partially to blame for the tepid numbers of “Solo” at the box-office....

Here’s what to look out for… Marvel Studios at Hall H Lets start with the most hotly anticipated panel of them all. After two years away, Marvel overlord Kevin Feige returns to Hall H once more, possibly with a view to laying bare at least some of the phase four slate of MCU Movies. But after somewhat criticizing his own move of disclosing the entire phase three slate, what can we expect from Feige, and his special guests?...

In 2023, the plan is for the fest to begin in-person, in Park City, on January 19 until the 29th. However, beginning on Tuesday, January 24, the Festival will expand online with a digital offering of ALL the competition titles (U.S. Dramatic, U.S. Documentary, World Cinema Dramatic, World Cinema Documentary, and NEXT), as well as selected works across other sections of the feature film program. If that’s the case, I’ll probably pass on going in-person to Sundance next January....

Principal photography on “Next Goal Wins” began in November 2019 and wrapped in January 2020, it has been in a state of limbo ever since. It didn’t help that one of the film’s stars, Armie Hammer, got the industry boot after numerous sexually assault allegations surfaced against him. An Eric Kohn interview with Telluride head honcho Julie Huntsinger is as sprightly as one might expect when chatting with Julie. She’s truly a delight. Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” has yet to screen at Telluride, but, after its triumphant Venice premiere, it seems like a done-deal that it will be the critical darling of 2019. That is, of course, until Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” screens at the New York Film Festival on September 27th … There are currently no other movies that have managed to garner the sheer unanimous buzz of Baumbach’s latest. “Uncut Gems” from The Safdies was already covered in an earlier post....

As contrarian as I might be about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one cannot deny the sheer ambition of the whole thing. A big chunk of the hate mail I get is for my criticism of Superhero movies. I’m going by movies with a 2021 release date. There are plenty of titles that merit to be on this list that sadly don’t have a planned release yet. Regardless, I’m starting to wonder if noteworthy titles such as Abdelatif Kechiche’s “Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo” and Gaspar Noe’s “Lux Aeterna” will ever be released stateside. Maybe those will eventually be included on here. No point to rank them just yet but I have counted 27 films that were above-average so far in 2021....

When did Depp’s artistic downfall occurred? I would say something happened around the time of his split with Vanessa Paradis, his partner of 14 years and mother of his two children. That’s when Amber Heard came into the picture and their now infamous and brief marriage back in 2014. To say this was a nightmare for Johnny, and Amber of course, would be an understatement. The divorce battle the two raged against each other was hateful and nasty, with Heard claiming that Depp was verbally and physically abusive to her....

EDIT — I should have been more precise with my argument. There are many films listed in the IW list that just aren’t sexy or sensual at all, which, I gather, has to do with the lack of actual “sexy” movies to choose from this century. I’m thinking of “Zola,” “X,” “Hustle and Flow,” “Promising Young Woman,” “American Honey,” and “Ex Machina,” among others. There’s sexual politeness, and politicking, to the sex-based movies being released this decade, so much so that they tend to completely neglect actual on-screen eroticism in favor of socio-topical resonance....

With all that being said, Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. is reporting that Cruise and Elon Musk’s Space X are working alongside NASA in what would be the first-ever narrative feature film to be shot in outer space. The as-of-yet-untitled film is said to be an “action-adventure.” No other details have been given to us by Fleming Jr. Suffice to say, If you thought Cruise could top climbing the Burj Kalifa in “Ghost Protocol,” then how about performing high-octane jumps ....

Tom Cruise was caught yelling at the crew on a movie set in an audiotape leaked to the media. It happened on the London set of Mission: Impossible 7, and it does sound like Cruise had good reason to unload on that person. London paper The Sun has posted audio — listen here — of the tirade, which was directed at the MI7 crew after Cruise noticed lapses in social distancing protocols that were put in place....

A few noteworthy films, both in and out of competition, include Chloé Zhao’s third film “Nomadland,” Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Wife of a Spy,” Gia Coppola’s “Mainstream,” Alex Gibney’s “Crazy, Not Insane” Quentin Dupieux’s “Mandibules” Roger Michell’s “The Duke” and Frederick Wiseman’s “City Hall,” Cate Blanchett will head up the 2020 jury, which includes director Joanna Hogg, Christian Petzold, Cristi Puiu, and actress Ludivine Sagnier. They will have to judge a peculiar line-up, one filled with the excitement of discovery, but one can’t help but see this 2020 edition as a major downer....

Notable surprises for this year’s edition of Venice: Todd Phillips “Joker” will actually play in competition. Unheard of for a Hollywood genre movie. The trailer makes it look legitimate. Phoenix is one of our great actors. It has to be more-than-decent …No “Mektoub: Extended Cut.” There were rumors Mektoub would make it into the Lido lineup in the form of an ‘extended cut,” alas, Venice head Alberto Barbera must have pulled the plug on that stunt....

Now, according to IndieWire’s Anne Thompson, the most likely scenario for “The French Dispatch” is a Cannes 2021 premiere next May, skipping the 2020 Oscar season altogether. That would allow the film to open around the world day and date, as Anderson’s films usually do. The full title of Anderson’s film is “The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun,” Although not a great deal is known about the plot, the film does have one hell of a cast, including, Frances McDormand, Timothee Chalamet, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, Benicio Del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, and Owen Wilson....
