Writer Ben Mekler tweeted about desperately wanting a tell-all book about the making of the movie, which prompted writer Jack Waz to reply with the insinuation that a version of “Cats,” genitalia included, did exist: He tweeted, “A VFX producer friend of a friend was hired in November to finish some of the 400 effects shots in @catsmovie....

The goal is to amass around 300 critics lists. I haven’t set a deadline yet for when the lists have to be submitted by, but the plan is to, hopefully, have the results posted live by 02.01.21. This year he has more than a dozen A-list filmmakers who want to bring their US films to competition. Theres also a quota of 4-5 Italian films in competition. This was written before Lukas Dhont’s “Close” was screened last night and, suffice to say, that film has everybody talking this morning. Will the filmmaker-heavy jury go for it? I’m not so sure they will, but absolutely everyone is convinced that it’s this year’s Palme, based purely on the emotional reaction. Critics seem to be mostly positive on it, with only myself, IndieWire and Variety having mixed reactions. A 12 minute standing ovation at the Lumiere has me thinking it’s a contender....

However, a film as slyly entertaining as “Knives Out” is too hard to resist, even for the haters. It’s a great whodunit, even though we already know who did it at the start. The cast Johnson has assembled for “Knives Out” is also impressive; Chris Evans, Daniel Crag, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Ana de Armas, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Lakeith Stanfield and Christopher Plummer. The official synopsis reads like an Agatha Christie novella: “Wealthy crime novelist Harlan Thrombrey invites his extended dysfunctional family to his mansion on his 85th birthday in hopes of reuniting them all....

“Emerald Fennell’s debut feature, “Promising Young Woman” plays like a feminist “Death Wish.” This thought-provoking movie has been the talk of the town ever since its premiere last weekend. Carey Mulligan stars as Cassie a barista and med-school dropout, haunted by her best friend’s dorm-room rape and ensuing suicide. Cassie spends her evenings, however, in clubs and bars, exacting revenge on any man who dares go over the line with her....

“Directed by Riley Stearns, whose underrated 2015 debut “Faults” deserves to be seen by a larger audience, “The Art of Self-Defense” was the best movie I saw at the IFFBoston this year. Casey, a shy bookeeper (played by Jesse Eisenberg), is attacked on the street one night by a masked motorcycle gang, which provokes him to join the local neighborhood karate studio to learn how to protect himself. However, the charismatic Sensei (a darkly hilarious Alessandro Nivola), and his lethal, brown-belt sidekick Anna (the always wonderful Imogen Poots) have secrets that are slowly, but meticulously revealed to us when Casey gets promoted to the mysterious “night classes” at the studio....

The Hate U Give is an urgently gripping and passionate achievement enhanced by a central performance that deserves all the awards attention it will likely receive in the coming months. Starr is played by the incredible Amandla Stenberg, and her range as an actress is nothing short of astounding. The story potently takes advantage of Starr’s “two lives:” “Starr Version 1” being at home in her poor neighborhood, where gangs and violence lurk at every corner, and “Starr Version 2” at the private school that she and her brothers attend, where her speech changes, her friends are all rich, and her boyfriend is white, which her dad has no clue about....
