I can exclusively report that Anderson’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,’ starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, Dev Patel, will be released via Netflix next fall. This one won’t be done in stop motion animation, unlike Anderson’s other Dahl adaptation, 2009’s “The Fantastic Mr. Fox.” It’ll be live-action. Production for this one in fact ended this past March in London. ‘Henry Sugar’ deals with a variety of stories, but the main one follows Henry Sugar, who is able to see through objects and predict the future with the help of a book he stole....

I can’t really say I know too many people who are amped up for this new film by Peele. What I will say is that he has a semi-decent following who will go watch anything he does, even though they might have been let down by “Us” (which I really liked on second viewing). The real pull of Peele is still “From the Writer-Director of “Get Out” and that is good enough reason for plenty of moviegoers to go out and buy a ticket to “Nope....

I didn’t feel the same high certain critics felt with “The Woman King.” It’s a mostly bloated and messy epic about black female warriors. Any momentum that gets built up in this 134-minute movie is quickly destroyed by constantly unnecessary narrative interruptions. The action is also very choppy. Prince-Bythewood did a better job directing the thrills in Netflix’s half-decent “The Old Guard.” However, Viola Davis is good as General Nanisca of The Dahomey army....

Before the nasty reviews, “Amsterdam” was projected to open in the $21 million range, but after the toxic buzz, ended up making $6.5 million this past weekend. Based on a projected global gross of $35M, and an estimated $70M global P&A spend, Deadline is projecting losses of close to $97 million for the film. Actors want to work with Russell, and some even worked for scale on “Amsterdam.” He’s directed many actors who wound up with Oscar nominations and, no doubt, when “Amsterdam” got greenlit, that was probably the end goal....

The lure of 2009’s “Avatar” wasn’t its “Pocahontas” meets “Dances With Wolves” storyline, it was mostly the fact that Cameron revitalized 3D technology for an industry that desperately needed a boost at the box-office. ‘Way of the Water’ seems like a visual feast, a Special Effects Oscar is practically in the books, but how will it keep our attention for 190 minutes? The main question I have is how exactly will Cameron one-up the groundbreaking 3D of the first film?...

Based on the hit musical, the longest-running one in Broadway history, “Cats” is the latest Oscar-bait vehicle for director Tom Hooper. Hooper, if you remember, gave us “Les Miserables,” “The Danish Girl” and “The King’s Speech.” Andrew Lloyd Webber reprises his own sweeping score. Also, the cast is A-list great: Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson, Idris Elba, James Corden, Jason Derulo and … Taylor Swift. The criminal case against the “Empire” actor has been thrown out by a judge. What!? Smollett was being prosecuted for allegedly staging a hate crime attack on the morning of January 29. In an Interview write-up, she’s decided to stir the pot further by implying that her film’s villain, Chris Pine‘s “Frank,” leader of a cult-like community, is based on “this insane man, Jordan Peterson, who is this pseudo-intellectual hero to the incel community.” Wilde is trying to gain some cultural points here with her throw down of Peterson, just as her film becomes a sinking ship due to numerous controversies. On its first day of opening, “Don’t Worry Darling” was the victim of another hit-piece, this one courtesy of Vulture. The gist of the report involves Florence Pugh and Olivia Wilde getting into a “screaming match” on the set of the film, with Miss Flo so mad that she told then-Warner Bros boss Toby Emmerich she wasn’t going to promote the film. Now for the good news, it might just be the huge turnout from Harry Styles fans, but “Don’t Worry Darling” did mighty well on Thursday....
