And so, is it any surprise that yet another big studio has given Villeneuve carte-blanche to splatter whatever his art desires on the screen with his next movie? Of course not. By all accounts Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” is the biggest risk of his career. Even David Lynch failed miserably with his own film adaptation back in 1984. And yet, I trust Villeneuve will do something very special with Herbert’s material....

The nine episodes were released all in one go, giving horror fans the chance to binge it all ahead of October 31 - or to save it for the day itself. Fans of The Haunting of Hill House are sure to love The Haunting of Bly Manor as it is the second in a planned anthology series from Netflix. Netflix rarely releases any data regarding the number of people who have watched its series but there is no doubt The Haunting of Bly Manor has already proven to be another big success for the streaming service - even if it might keep you up at night....

Now, Chalamet is saying that it’s back on and “coming soon.” At least that’s what he told press at the London premiere of “Bones and All.” “Going Electric,” still being directed by James Mangold, is said to follow Dylan as he “rises to fame on his way to becoming a folk music icon.” This would ideally take place during the singer’s beginnings in the 1960 folk scene in New York City’s Greenwich Village up until Dylan’s 1966 motorcycle crash....

David (Steve Carell) lives with son Nic (an excellent Timothee Chalamet), and second wife Karen (Maura Tierney) in their comfortable San Francisco home. Major problems arise when Nic becomes addicted to Methamphetamine. The movie then, for the duration of its 112 or so minutes, goes back and forth between Nic’s continuous cycle of relapse and recovery. Any doubts that Chalamet’s breakthrough performance in “Call Me By Your Name” would be a one-time deal are easily vanquished by his passionate take here of Nic....

REVIEW: ‘Lazzaro Felice’: Alice Rohrwacher’s Evokes Timeless, 1960s Cinema [Cannes Review] ‘Lazzaro’ comes to us from writer-director Rohrwacher, whose other two narrative feature films, both selected for Cannes, I didn’t particularly like, but ‘Lazzaro’ is a major step up for her. Netflix is pushing this hard for a Best Foreign Language Film nomination and they might get it, which means that both this and ‘Roma’ would be available via streaming when the nominations are announced in early January....

Universal Pictures press release statement: “While Universal Pictures had already paused the marketing campaign for The Hunt, after thoughtful consideration, the studio has decided to cancel our plans to release the film, ” a spokesperson for Universal said in a statement. “We stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the right time to release this film....

With that being said, Bilge just proclaimed Roman Gavras’ “Athena” as “one of the greatest films I’ve ever seen.” I don’t remember the last time I saw a film and proclaimed these same sentiments, most of the time I let a film deep and simmer in my head before espousing stuff like that. To each their own. Gavras’ film just screened at Venice and has a 74 on Metacritic — not, by any means, an all-timer....

Many have decided to play, side-by-side, the fact that Polanski’s “An Officer and A Spy” is playing in competition and that only two female-directed films will be part of the main competition. Polanski, was recently expelled by the Academy because of his conviction in 1977 of statutory rape. “1 rapist. 2 women directors in competition….What else am I missing?” tweeted Melissa Silverstein, founder of the organization Women and Hollywood. Yikes....

“One theory as to why Blonde has been delayed: its NC-17 rating as a result of its graphic sexual violence. Notably, Oates’s reimagining of Norma Jean’s life involves a diary-like chapter in which a 21-year-old Monroe goes for her first movie audition at a place referred to as The Studio, only for a producer, Mr Z, to violently rape her. Critics and audiences are positive on “Thirteen Lives”, an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 94% audience score. This would have been perfect fodder for TIFF audiences — one can imagine it finishing in the top 3 for the coveted Toronto audience award. In fact, this is Howard’s best-reviewed movie since 2013’s “Rush.” Howard’s most acclaimed films have been “Rush” (89%), “Frost/Nixon” (93%), “Cinderella Man” (80%),“Apollo 13” (96%) and “A Beautiful Mind” (74%) There’s a six-part Netflix docuseries on the Thai cave rescue team being released in September....

The announcement came on Saturday in an interview with LaVanguardia. Allen stated that he had no desire to make any more movies, but that he wanted to write a novel in his final years. About that final film, set in Paris and shot entirely in French, Allen tells the Spanish outlet that “it will be similar to “Match Point,” exciting, dramatic and also very sinister.” The plan is to shoot it in a couple of weeks....

The one question I keep getting via email, I suspect many of these coming from K-Stew fans, is why oh why was Larrain’s film not selected. And so it goes, without much surprise mind you, that “Spencer” was quite simply rejected by the NYFF selection committee. They didn’t like it. There is no other reason for its absence. You see, behind all those raves from the fall festivals hides a polarizing movie that even yours truly despised with every fiber of his being....

The screenplay, adapted by Jessica Sharzer from Darcey Bell’s novel, seems to dwell into satirical comedy territory but is also very much a thriller. This mixture of genres doesn’t always work out tonally for Feig, but his film never stops entertaining as he tackles a theme that is too good to resist: female friendship. Kendrick is Stephanie, a single mother, vlogger, and all around compulsive taskmaster that has her world quickly shaken by Lively’s uber-rich diva Emily, a martini-chugging fashionista that tries to loosen up Steph in ways she never imagined possible....

The former Secretary of State, Senator, and First Lady will be the focus of Burstein’s “Hillary,” which is set to premiere in January at the Sundance Film Festival. Will I attend the screening? Not sure yet. Hillary has always been a source of controversy for me, as one of the most polarizing figures in American history. After losing the US Presidential Election in epic fashion in 2016, Clinton must have been somewhat embarrassed that a self-proclaimed “pussy-grabber” beat her in an election she was supposed to overwhelmingly win....
