A few versions of the film have been test-screened since last spring. One was said to be a more serious cut, the second was deemed to be the more comedic version. I am not entirely sure which one was chosen for release, but, judging by the numerous clips and trailers we have seen thus far, it does look as though the more comedic version has been chosen for release by McKay and Netflix....
“F9” had a “modest” budget of $200 million, but did manage to make billions worldwide. So, I presume Universal isn’t too worried. Then again, this is film number 10, at some point this series will whimper out, maybe not with this film, but one can only hope. The $340 million budget stems from an increase in salary for Vin Diesel and the rest of the cast, production costs caused by global inflation and charges for COVID-19 testing requirements....
The film stars French-Romanian actress Anamaria Vartolomei as Anne, a university student in 1963 France who cannot seem to find her way in a sexist bureaucracy to terminate her pregnancy. This is an uncomfortable watch and all the more for the fact that Diwan refuses to hold back on the explicit details. There’s a memorable scene where one of Anne’s friends teaches her how to masturbate with a pillow at their dorm room, she’s not sure what an orgasm is, but tells her to continue grinding on the pillow until she feels a release....
This comedic drama, shot aboard the Queen Mary 2 as the cruise ship went from New York to England, has Streep playing novelist, and compulsive self-doubter, Alice, a Pulitzer-winning high-brow author who has been invited to receive a prestigious literary award in the U.K, but, due to her fear of flying, insists that her literary agency pay for a cruise voyage, and also for two of her semi-estranged friends, Susan (Wiest) and Roberta (Bergen), as well as her neurotic nephew Tyler (Lucas Hedges) to make the trip alongside her....
The decision to move the upcoming Bond entry was going to come no matter which way you shook it. New York and Los Angeles, the two biggest U.S. markets, are still shut down and won’t be reopening in the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases in Europe have been steadily augmenting every week. Also, putting into the account the fact that Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” has been tanking at the U.S. box-office, there is an unwillingness for many Americans to go back to theatres until there’s a vaccine....
A painterly film, Joshua James Richard‘s magic-hour cinematography is absolutely stunning, it stars Frances McDormand as Fern, a widowed nomad, with no interest in settling down, who constantly evolves from community to community in her rundown RV van. Don’t call her homeless, she prefers to use the term “house-less,” moving from job to job, camp to camp, parking lot to parking lot with no intention to settle down. Set in Obama’s America during 2012, just 4 years after the recession hit, it depicts a country still struggling to get back to normal....
This is surprising news given that Depp hasn’t shown much interest in returning as Captain Jack Sparrow, especially after Disney canned him. If you remember, Disney fired Depp from the franchise shortly after Amber Heard’s Washington Post op-ed accusing him of spousal abuse. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise has been dead to many fans, especially after the last release, 2017’s “Dead Men Tell No Tales.” However, money talks and reboots occur on a near-weekly basis in this industry....
There’s a new 72-minute making-of doc called “Road To Roma“ now available on Netflix and, wouldn’t you know it, some of the more memorable sequences in the doc are shown in color! In “Road to Roma” Cuaron looks back on how he managed to splatter personal childhood memories onto the screen to create his great and artfully rendered movie. Set in 1970 Mexico City, the success of “Roma” came in how vividly captured these small moments turned out to be....
“She Said,” the movie about the NYT investigation into Weinstein’s sex scandals, made $150,000 last night in previews. The film is opening in 2000+ theaters. Yikes. That figure sets up a predicted $2-2.5 million opening weekend. The film was made on a $32 million budget. Just to put things in perspective, “Spotlight” cost $20 million. Fact of the matter is that, outside of a small group of media people, there is no audience for this type of movie right now....
As we speak, “Spencer” has a 50% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 500 reviews submitted, and, even more concerning, it is failing at the U.S. box-office. Both of these things could sink the film and K-Stew’s Oscar odds. “Spencer” earned $630,000 for a $6.04 million 17-day cume. The film’s budget is said be around $18 million. What’s even stranger about Neon’s “Spencer” distribution is how, in its third week of release, Neon dropped “Spencer” from 311 theaters....
Showalter directed one above-average movie in his filmmaking career: 2016’s “The Big Sick” which was really driven by Kumail Nanjiani’s comic wit and screenplay contribution. He also co-wrote the cult classic “Wet Hot American Summer.” Showalter’s other directorial credits are “The Baxter,” “Hello, My Name is Doris,” “The Lovebirds,” and last year’s “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” Contrary to that last movie mentioned, Jim Parsons, who stars in “Spoiler Alert,” will not win a lead acting Oscar....

The premise isn’t complicated, two couples rent an AirBNB for a weekend in the Oregon country. Michelle (Alison Brie) is married to Charlie (Dan Stevens), the alpha male of the group, who has the hots for startup co-worker Mina (Sheila Vand), who’s dating Charlie’s deadbeat part-time Lyft driver brother Josh (Jeremy Allen White). Michelle and Josh are oblivious to Charlie-Mina’s affair “They have their creativity going on,” Michelle gullibly tells Josh, but things get slightly complicated when Charlie and Mina find hidden cameras in the airbnb shower they hooked up in during the wee wee hours of the evening....
At least that’s what I gathered when he decided to theorize, without evidence or clues leading up to it, that Michael Jackson used a Simpsons episode to ‘Groom Boys’ This all comes amidst the firestorm that has happened ever since the Jackson doc “Leaving Neverland” premiered on HBO. Al Jean was interviewed by The Daily Beast when he said that he believed part of the reason Jackson agreed to appear on “The Simpsons” was to appeal to a younger demographic to help him “groom” his boys....
It’s not like Sony has that much faith in the film. The release date for it is September 16th, which is a semi dumping ground before the contenders get unleashed from October to December. Expect a TIFF berth for this one. “The Woman King” is basically a gung-ho depiction of black tribeswomen kicking the asses of evil white men. It’s based on the true story of the Dahomey women, a tribe who fought to PROTECT their own slave trade....
Congrats to filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythehood, who has made far worthier films in her career (“Love & Basketball”, “Beyond the Lights”). Viola Davis as well, who called her semi-decent performance in the film the “magnum opus” of her career. I guess she forget about her incredible work in “Fences,” “Widows” and ‘Ma Rainey.’ Don’t get me wrong, these aren’t blockbuster numbers, but it’s neither a flop. It has a $50 million budget and what it now needs is legs....
I had to look it up, and a gentleman by the name of Ol Parker directed “Ticket to Paradise,” his past credits include the “Mama Mia” sequel and both “Exotic Marigold Hotel” movies, so don’t expect a masterpiece here. This seems to be purely a Roberts-Clooney vehicle and we all know they have great chemistry together, not to mention that they are close friends in real-life. The film is set to be released on October 21st, 2022....
