Bellochio’s film follows the two-decade journey of Tommaso (a fantastic Pierfrancesco Favino), a man well-positioned in the Italian Mafia who becomes, along with his family, the target of the Cosa Nostra. Why do they want this man dead? Well, because after being arrested by Brazilian police and extradited to Italy, he chooses to testify against his enemies in order to secure the safety of his wife and children. He is now officially considered a traitor....

Judging by early reactions for “A Man Called Otto,” maybe Hanks has a shot. The film itself sounds very minor. I still believe Hanks could even sneak in for his divisive “Elvis” performance in the Supporting Actor category. ‘Otto’ screened yesterday in L.A. to very warm reception. Let’s not perform any somersaults over this movie just yet, but encouraging signs seem to be creeping in. Set for a Christmas Day release, Marc Forster is directing this remake of the 2015 Swedish film....

Just a few days ago, I emailed my source at Disney Canada who then confirmed to me that there were indeed plans to scratch off more big titles from theatrical to a Disney+ premiere. Based on the book Caging Skies by Christine Leunens and taking place during World War II, Jojo Rabbit’s titular character is a lonely German boy (Roman Griffin Davis) whose imaginary friend is Hitler (played by Waititi) and whose mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”) has described this film as an “anti-hate satire.” The film also stars Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, and Sam Rockwell....

‘Knock’ – which won the Audience Award: U.S. Documentary and the Festival Favorite Award at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival – is actually the product of a Kickstarter campaign. A French trailer for Sciamma’s movie has been released today, coinciding with its selection at the prestigious New York Film Festival (which I hear had a divisive reaction to the film, not unlike 2017 when Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name” barely squeaked by into the festival selection, despite reservations from NYFF head Kent Jones). In my Cannes review of “Portrait of A Lady On Fire” I wrote that the film “is surely one of the peaks of entirely female-led cinema that we’ve seen in recent years, if ever....

Nolan’s much-anticipated feature is readying itself for a worldwide release, and Warner Bros.couldn’t care less that Governors Cuomo and Newsom are refusing to reopen theaters in their respective states. Fine by me, let the rest of the world catch “Tenet.” I’ve already been invited to watch it at a Canadian press screening happening during its week of release. The David Ehrlichs of this world can complain all they want that this isn’t the time to watch a movie in a theater, but what do I care?...

Best Director: Josh and Benny Safdie, “Uncut Gems” Not many more deserving of the prize than these two guys. Maybe Scorsese, but he’ll just have to settle for the Best Picture.prize. Best Screenplay: Quentin Tarantino, “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” A pleasant surprise. Although many were predicting Baumbach for this category, I can’t help but think that maybe, just maybe, the NYFCC voting body knows that Baumbach will either win director or picture in the next few minutes....
