If I remember correctly, the first Ingmar Bergman movie I ever saw was “Persona,” which was seen at Concordia University’s J.A. de Seve theater whilst I was studying film at that same college. The key scene for me in “Persona,” and one which no other Bergman film would, oddly enough, ever match in terms of hypnotic and surreal quality, is when character Alma recounts a day at the beach she had many years ago where she encountered two men that pleasured her to orgasm....

It’s fairly graphic and, quite frankly, shocking, I was told. Definitely not the Guadagnino of the summery “Call Me By Your Name” and “I Am Love,” but you get hints and glimpses of that style throughout the film. Call it a mix of Antonioni and Romero. Regardless, a teaser was released this late afternoon. It definitely intrigues, but barely gives us anything in its 28 seconds of frames. Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor will be scoring the film, which stars Timothee Chalamet and Taylor Russell....
Quite intriguing that he doesnt mention Aronofsky, Zeller, McDonagh, Dominik, and Schrader. We already know Telluride didn’t like “Don’t Worry Darling,” so that one’s out of the picture. I would think, now that they are not Venice-bound, “Women Talking” and “She Said” will be world premieres at Telluride. The Telluride selection committee are supposed to see Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise” next week. That film, just like Inarritu’s, is still in the very late stages of post-production....
Of course, the Oscars were never meant to award the actual best movie of the year. A lot of variables come into play, especially in the way you campaign and market a film to voters. Critics can only help so much. I remember vividly “Pulp Fiction” losing over “Forrest Gump” and thinking “man, they really messed this one up.” There was a time when Tarantino’s masterpiece was actually considered too radical for the Academy’s tastes....
