We already know that it’s set for a September 28th launch on Netflix, but it seems as though a big chunk of the WoR community really wants to see this one on the big screen. Well, good news. Word is that Netflix has finally decided to release “Blonde” in New York theaters on September 16th and on the 23rd in other US locations, the UK, Canada and Ireland. These dates also officially make “Blonde” eligible for Oscar consideration....

In an AMA on Reddit last year, Aster had mentioned that his “next one will either be a zonky nightmare comedy or a big, sickly domestic melodrama.” Cue in the “zonky nightmare comedy” project and set aside the domestic melodrama. We have no further details about this film, but the short description is enough to whet our appetites until we get more intel on this one. Aster turned heads at Sundance 2018 with his incredibly realized neo-horror film “Hereditary,” the following year he polarized film fans with his love/hate statement “Midsommar,” a film which I was lukewarm on upon initial viewing until I finally caught up with the 3-hour director’s cut at home and had a 180 opinion reversal (although I still think it’s not as accomplished a movie as “Hereditary”)....

Maybe Robert Eggers’ solidly reviewed “The Northman” could become a contender these later months, but it’s projected to be a major flop at the box-office this coming weekend. Call it a long shot for now. We’ve amassed 23 obvious contenders, on-paper at least, right below. I imagine more than half of these will probably not make it in the end, that’s always the case when you start predictions this early in the game....

According to Deadline, top-tier Irish-born actor Brendan Gleeson has signed on to star as President Trump in the upcoming CBS miniseries “A Higher Loyalty,” which will be based on formerly disgraced FBI boss James Comey’s book “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership.” Jeff Daniels is set to play Comey. The miniseries will be loosely based on Comey’s book, which took place during his tenure as the head of the FBI and covers his subsequent firing when Trump felt that Comey was not only disloyal to him but that he was potentially spying on him behind his back....

And so, with all that laid out as an intro, take a deep breath and realize that 2021 will likely be the same kind of ordeal, movie-wise, as last year’s shitshow. We’re all going to have to rely on streaming platforms and VOD and that’s fine because we had an innumerable amount of great movies released during the pandemic last year. Digital editions of film festivals (Toronto, Sundance, SXSW, New York) helped as well, turning into launch pads for a number of great films, but not the Cannes Film Festival....

The fact that so many quality films were supposed to premiere at last year’s festival, not to mention plenty others skipped Venice and Toronto for a Cannes 2021 premiere, means that this year’s Cannes Film Festival could be one for the history books. That is why Fremaux also told the morning show “Nice Matin” that he may add 1-2 day to this year’s festival, there are just too many great films to choose from....

I plan on watching all 21 competition titles, and around a dozen or so selections from the sidebars. The ticketing system this year is an absolute mess, but I presume it’ll get smoothed out in the coming days? It better, the complaints have been numerous and many of my colleagues are absolutely frustrated by the online system this year. UPDATE: Fremaux seems to blaming the ticketing debacle on bots. What I am absolutely not looking forward to this year is there being more press for this 75th edition....

Kazan’s “She Said” co-star Carey Mulligan, who gives the better performance of the two, will be campaigned in this year’s very weak Best Supporting Actress category. Know what? She has a shot. Kazan, the aforementioned sacrificed lamb, is being campaigned as lead and thus has absolutely no shot at a nomination. Five days ago, right before the film premiered at NYFF, I reported that I was hearing Mulligan would likely be campaigned as Supporting....

Drucker will be joining a cast that already includes Olivier Rabourdin and Clotilde Cournau. Mega-producer Saïd Ben Saïd confirmed it all via social media and said that production begins next month. It’s been a decade since Breillat’s last film, the scathingly original “Abuse of Weakness.” This latest film is said to be a remake of May el-Toukhy’s “Queen of Hearts.” I interviewed Breillat more than 6 years ago and she was quite adamant that there was no future for more films in her career....

Gelfond mentioned Nolan’s fervent opinion during this morning’s IMAX earnings conference call: “Certain filmmakers are very anxious to have their movies released. I don’t know anyone in America who is pushing harder than Chris Nolan to have the theaters open and to have his movie released in July when it’s scheduled for.” In late March, Nolan had penned an op-ed for the Washington Post, writing that “it’s vital to acknowledge the prompt and responsible decisions made by all kinds of companies across our country that have closed their doors” and that “as a filmmaker, my work can never be complete without those workers and the audiences they welcome....

I just wrote this on Facebook: I was a fan of BlackKklansman, but Washington, Denzel’s son, didn’t particularly strike me as being an out-of-this-world talent that merited a leading role in a Christopher Nolan movie. Then again, you don’t really need to “act” in a Nolan movie as much as just be a part of the narrative gimmick that he sets up for his actors. Don’t get me wrong, I do love many of his movies, but they are not what you might call “acting showcases....

The movie is based on the true story of Richard Jewell, a security guard during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games who discovered a bomb and tried to evacuate the grounds before it would detonate. However, as the police started investigating the drama they started to realize that Jewell could be a suspect and, in fact, responsible for entire the bomb hoax. Paul Walter Hauser (“I, Tonya”) plays Jewell, Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, and Olivia Wilde complete the cast....

Now, much like every movie year, Le Clint has already shot and wrapped up another movie, this one starring Sam Rockwell and titled “The Ballad of Richard Jewell.” The film’s production started in June and now, here we are, just five months later and there are plans to release it on December 13th of this year. The press release from WB is as follows: Warner Bros.: “RICHARD JEWELL will be released on 12/13/19....

There’s an overwhelming feeling of the now as you watch “Sticks and Stones.” It feels immediate, a plea from one of our very best comedians to his own audience to STOP the hysteria. The divide happening currently in America is frightening, as our tribalist nature has split us all up into an insubordinate amount of group-thinking. There is no more room for agreement, concisely-drawn and substantial arguments have been neglected for “safe space” measures and social media tweets....

His 2014 film “Blue Ruin” is a crime-thriller masterpiece and 2016’s “Green Room” was such a dark and nasty neo-Nazi revenge thriller that it felt like an avant-garde horror movie.” “Saulnier’s latest venture into the dark abyss, “Hold the Dark,” has him teaming up with Netflix....
