As it stands, “Fire of Love” is the current frontrunner to win the Best Documentary Oscar. However, that could change rapidly with two big titles incoming at the fall fests. Coming up is Laura Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” produced by Participant which will be in competition at Venice and was chosen as the New York Film Festival Centerpiece Film. Then there’s Steve James’ “A Compassionate Spy,” set to premiere at Venice, Telluride, Toronto and Chicago. What we have here are two major films from well-respected documentary filmmakers. The race for the 2023 Best Documentary Oscar is taking shape, with more surprises to come. The other contenders to look out for this year include … “Aftershock”, “All That Breathes”, “Bad Axe”, “Bitterbrush,” “Descendant, “Last Journey Home,” “Moonage Daydream” “Navalny,” and “The Territory”.
