Of course, it’s quite the bet to bank on this happening, but, quite surprisingly, it is a possibility, especially in a year when most of the major studios have been plagued with movie delays and constant rescheduling. Enter Netflix, who have fallen short of winning the top prize the last two years with the likes of Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma.” They again have a decent shot at winning the top prize with Aaron Sorkin’s rousing and crowd-pleasing “Trial of the Chicago 7.” The rest of the Netflix contenders for Best Picture are “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Da 5 Bloods,” “Pieces of a Woman,” “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “Midnight Sky,” “The Prom,” and “Hillbilly Elegy.” Regardless, there are numerous acting contenders within these films as well, which means Netflix will continue to up its credibility as a major distributor of cinema on the small screen.
