The usual suspects are named, most of them at least, but the research behind this piece is rather lazy. There’s a lot of wasted space for films that won’t even be seen this year. They list Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All” as a possibility. However, all they had to do was email the director, who told us last week that he won’t be at Cannes since he’s shooting “Challengers” in May and June. A Venice premiere is already locked for the film. What else? They have Matteo Garrone’s “Iao Capitano,” but the Italian filmmaker’s latest just started shooting a week ago. Kantemir Balagov’s “Monica” hasn’t shot a single frame yet. The Russian filmmaker is currently in Georgia trying to get a US VISA, but, hey, IndieWire thinks he might be going to Cannes with his unfilmed project. Jessica Hausner’s “Club Zero” is also listed as a potential title — the problem is that Hausner just received funding on the film and that — you guessed it —it hasn’t been shot yet. They could have also emailed a few in-the-know people like I have done these last few months and learn that Claire Denis’ “The Stars at Noon,” is definitely skipping Cannes this year. Then there’s mention of Abderrahmane Sissako’s “The Perfumed Hill,” a film which has been in pre-production hell for nearly three years — IndieWire believes it has a shot at Cannes … I could go on and on with another half a dozen titles dubiously listed in their piece.
