In the last 72 hours, Venice has made a major push to snatch away some potential Cannes titles. It’s a bloodbath right now. The lineup hasn’t even be finalized. Also, Ira Sachs is the great director I was referring to earlier in the week. He originally wasn’t sure “Passages” was going to be ready on time for Cannes, but who are we kidding here? Hotshot producer Said Ben Said is behind this project and he’s all about Cannes. Honestly, if it weren’t for his last film “Frankie”, there would be a lot more anticipation for “Passages.” One thing’s for certain, the Cahiers du Cinema guys must be drooling right now in anticipation for this one. VERY FINAL PREDICTIONS: Ostlund, Kore-eda, Fukada, Cronenberg, Park, Denis, Sachs, Serebrennikov, Reichardt, Hogg, Dardenne, Mungiu, Hansen-Love, Desplechin, Miller, Crialese, Wincour, Mysius, Mouret, Dhont, Abassi Note: Claire Denis’ “The Stars at Noon” might be a late addition to the fest. Over the past few weeks, I broke the news that the likes of Aronofsky, Guadagnino, Polley, Inarritu, Zeller, Aster and Wes Anderson were skipping Cannes … I would add Yorgos Lanthimos to that list, but there’s been a strange silence surrounding the Greek auteur’s “Poor Things.” Not even the head of a major US Festival could give me an answer: “I am extremely curious about this one- there is an odd silence around it which leads me to believe it just might be something we see in Cannes.” Wouldn’t that be a great surprise.
