The competition now includes five films directed by female directors — a Cannes record. Kate Erbland must be happy. That makes it a total of 21 films in competition and 19 in Un Certain Regard. A pretty robust lineup. Serra is the first non-Almodovar Spanish director to be in competition since 2009. Léonor Serraille nabbing that last French slot came out of absolutely nowhere. Other movies added, this time out-of-competition, include Serge Bozon’s “Don Juan,” Dominik Moll’s “Nuit du 12;” Emmanuel Mouret’s “Chronique d’une liaison passagère” and “L’innocent,” from Louis Garrel I’m still not quite sure what Cannes Premiere is supposed to be, as a section.
