Hanging in second this week is Universals “1917”. Sam Mendes (fresh off a DGA win) and looking set to be favorite heading into the Oscars, delivered around $15.8M domestically, lifting the film (just like “Bad Boys”) past $100M domestic. Internationally, the film added $23.7M giving the film a worldwide total of over $200M. In third this week and destined for a huge loss is “Dolittle” from Universal. Adding just $12.5M the film is still under $50M domestically and only stands at $91M globally. Weigh that against the reported $175M budget and it’s not good news for Universal. Slipping in fourth this week is new release “The Gentlemen”. Guy Richie’s gangster thriller hauled in $11M, and studio STX is planning an expanded release schedule over the coming weeks. As for early totals, the film sits just over $30M, with four territories still to open in. Still in the top five (impressive given the absence of Disney’s “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker”) is Sony’s “Jumanji: The Next Level”, which added $7.9M domestically and $9.6M overseas to lift the global tally to $738M. Outside the top five is DreamWork’s and Universal’s new release “The Turning”. Raking in $7.3M the critically panned horror also took just $800K overseas. And mentioning “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”, the film became only the 15th movie of all time to make over $500M at the domestic box office. The most notable limited releases were Roadside’s “The Last Full Measures” which brought in a steady $1.06M from over 600 theaters. Next weekend sees Paramount make their 2020 bow with the release of the Blake Lively starring “The Rhythm Section”.
