The real news however comes in the shape of the summer season closing out with the second lowest weekend total of 2019. Overall, this summer’s BO has totaled $4.22B, sitting 4% down on last year, but still enough to land it in the top ten summer hauls of all time (in eighth place). Back to this rather solemn weekend for moviegoing, it was yet again Universal’s R-rated comedy “Good Boys” that sealed second spot with $9.19M, pushing it closer to $60M domestic (currently $56M) and its Labour Day (estimated) total of $2.4M should edge it closer to that mark. Disney’s “The Lion King” meanwhile continues to break records, with an estimated $6.7M domestic and $20.6M internationally, not only pushing its worldwide tally over $1.5B, but also taking it past “The Avengers” and into seventh spot on the all-time grossers list. Meanwhile, Universal’s own juggernaut, “Hobbs & Shaw” had a great week internationally scoring $39M, pushing its global tally to $525M, whilst the extra $6.28M domestic moves its overall global standing to $684M. Coming in fifth was Sony’s “Overcomer,” with $5.7M as its domestic load should top $20M following Monday. As for the largest newcomer of the week. Blumhouse’s “Don’t let Go” starring David Oyelowo made $2.4M from just less than 1000 locations this weekend, whilst ‘Bennett’s War’ from Forrest Films debuted in 970 theaters with only $445K to show for it. The big winner in limited release came in the form of ‘Tod@as Caen’ as Pantelion’s feature managed to cross the million mark from just 371 theaters ($1.08M). The start of the fall season brings with it what looks like a shot in the arm for the box-office next week with Warner Bros will no doubt hope to beat the $123M domestic opening of 2017’s original with this sequel, boasting star power of the likes of Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy, whilst also opening In over 300 locations more than “IT” did in 2017.
