Sacha Baron Cohen stars as Borat Sagdiyev, the fictitious Kazakh journalist who goes back to the United States to make a documentary, based on real-life, docu-interactions with everyday Americans. The film is directed by Jason Woliner (“Parks and Recreation”) who replaces the original film’s, Larry Charles. Cohen made a name for himself in 2006. I was already a fan of the brilliant satire in his HBO series “Da Ali G Show,” but it was a real kick to see him bring Borat to the big screen during the Bush-era. We badly needed it. The film’s guerilla-style filmmaking brought the laughs, which came with a nastily rendered satirical sting. It turns out that this wily character was more than just about cheap laughs, he also brought out the worst in America; a homophobic, racist, and culturally divided nation slyly hiding its bigotry back in the early aughts (much more so than it is today).
