National Review’s Armond White has released his eccentric list of the best-released movies of the last decade. Unlike many of my colleagues, I have absolutely no problem with Armond White’s brand of gonzo film criticism. To disagree with White’s opinions is to miss the point he is trying to make with his writings; that any and all film criticism is and always will be open-to-interpretation. There is no one movie that will be loved by every single person who sees it. movie taste is interpretable but never conclusive.
White’s Best of the 2010s list includes potent auteurs such as Marco Bellocchio, Denis Villeneuve, Alain Resnais, and Terence Davies. However, more importantly, controversy arises when he includes two Zack Snyder DC superhero films (“Man of Steel” and “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice”), Michael Bay’s 2013 film, “Pain and Gain,” the Nicolas Cage-starring “Mom and Dad,” and Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin.” Good stuff, bruh.
