One thing you can expect from this film is Cronenberg’s usual knack for avoiding conventionality. His parasite-filled, sexually taboo, and ultra-violent art is what dreams are made of. Or are they nightmares? This latest surreal body-horror statement from Cronenberg is based on a screenplay he wrote 20 years ago, titled “Painkillers”. It was set to star Nicolas Cage. In this 2022 version, Viggo Mortensen has taken over the lead role.
