As far as A24’s “Midsommar” goes, Ari Aster’s sophomore feature, an R-rated polarizer, debuted in sixth place with a $6 million intake over the weekend and $10.9 million during its first five days of release. What will be interesting to see is how it fares in the next few weeks as word-of-mouth, for better or for worse, spreads about the film’s batshit craziness. Curiosity seekers will no doubt flock to see this maddening movie, which garnered a C+ CinemaScore — a mediocre rating, no doubt, but I expected much worse.
