Yifei posted an image on the Chinese social media network Weibo that sparked controversy after it appeared that the Disney actress decided to take a stand in solidarity with Hong Kong police, despite reports that they used excessive force against peaceful protesters and journalists (via Newsweek). Liu shared an image that said, “I support Hong Kong’s police, you can beat me up now.” Which was quickly followed by a statement in English that read, “What a shame for Hong Kong” and “#Ialsosupporthongkongpolice#.” This led to #BoycottMulan trending on social media.
