A tortured soul if there ever was one in the industry, “Judy” is based on Garland’s tumultuous life and is a biopic, directed by Rupert Goold, that seems to be focusing on Garland’s final years on earth, during the late ‘60s, as she arrived in London for sell-out concerts. It’s too early to take the movie seriously as an Oscar contender, especially since these kinds of projects have a knack for easily sinking into TV movie quality, but the thematic resonance of depicting a Hollywood actress that was taken advantage of by almost every man she came across in the industry is incredibly topical. Also, a Zellweger comeback is more-than-welcome, especially since the actress has all but been MIA from the spotlight since 2005 (when she won Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for “Cold Mountain”). “Judy” will be released in the US on September 27th, 2019.
