Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car” has turned out to be the critical favourite of the big city groups. You won’t hear any complaints coming from me. Absolutely nobody expected this to happen — Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” was supposed to cruise and sweep with every critics group. Well, no siree, the New York film critics kickstarted the momentum just a week ago and Boston got sucked into it today by naming Hamaguchi’s film the best of the year. Will Los Angeles do the same next week? Plenty of L.A. critics loved Hamaguchi’s film and I see no reason for “Drive My Car” to not achieve the holy trifecta (New York, Los Angeles and Boston).
