Farelly’s film won the Award for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, besting a category that included “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Favourite,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” and “Vice.” Meanwhile, Singer’s Queen biopic was a surprise winner for the Globes, besting front-runner “A Star Is Born” in a shocking turn of events. It also managed to beat out Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther,” Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman.”
Both films have been severely criticized by Social Media hounds for various different reasons. ‘Rhapsody’ was under the microscope when it came to the film’s treatment of the depiction of Freddy Mercury’s sexuality, not to mention director Bryan Singer being a #MeToo poster boy with numerous sexual assault allegations looming over him. Whereas “Green Book” was hit hard by Viggo Mortensen uttering the N-word last month at a Q&A, even though he was trying to use it as an example of racial intolerance, and despite accusations implying that the film itself goes against the current grain of progressive thought, with the term “white savior” having been uttered more than a few times by film journalists. Also, more recently, Dr. Don Shirley’s family coming out saying the film was a “symphony of lies.”
