The Oscar-winning writer and director hasn’t released a film since “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”. That one turned out to be a surprising Oscar contender, with 7 nominations. I doubt McDonagh ever thought his movie would be a major Oscar player, but all the better for it. Five years later, McDonagh is back with a smaller-scaled film, in the same vein as “In Bruges.” However, tamper down those “In Bruges” comparisons a bit … Yes, “The Banshees of Inisherin” is a two-hander like ‘Bruges’, and stars the same lead actors, but it’s said to be very different in tone....

You can read my review of “The Irishman,” which was immediately written after I had attended its world premiere at the New York Film Festival this past September: “Despite clocking in at close to 3 and a half hours, “The Irishman” never feels slow or out-of-breath, which is a testament to Thelma Schoonmaker’s exquisite editing, juggling all the timelines together in ways that never let up — this is a high-wire act of editing from a legendary woman responsible for the greatest edited movie of all-time (Raging Bull)....

The result from all of this is a rather lacklustre lineup of films from last year with only a handful of marquee titles managing to breakout internationally; Francois Ozon’s “Summer of 85,” Philippe Lacôte‘s “Night of the Kings,” and Philippe Garrel’s “The Salt of Tears.” However, intriguingly enough, France’s Oscar submission for the Best International Film Oscar category this year was an out-of-left-field choice. In fact, Filippo Meneghetti’s “Two of Us,” this year’s French pick, had its world premiere back in 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival....

First reactions to “Wonder Woman 1984” are good, but, be warned, they do come from “critics” who have a tendency of harping glowing praise towards just about any new superhero movie that falls on their laps. Most especially, a certain Erik Davis — the go-to guy for big studio machinery to get word-of-mouth rolling for their next big tentpole. With the knowledge that Wes Anderson, and Jonathan Glazer Are now 2023 films. Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” and Ari Aster’s “Disappointment Blvd” currently in limbo (although that could change). And that means Scorsese, Fincher, O. Russell, Del Toro, Mendes, Chazelle and Spielberg are all skipping the fall fests. I’ve gathered 70 movies that could screen during the fall festival season. A few surprises could (probably will) sneak in. I’m thinking maybe Chazelle’s “Babylon” ultimately decides to go the way of fall festivals....

All of this to say that Cinemascore’s exit polling has audiences rating “Men” a D+ which is an absolutely brutal grade for the usually very-easy-to-please CS audience. I gather the total ire for this movie comes from the last 20 minutes, which is when the film, purposely, turns into an incoherent mindfuck. The writer-director of “Ex-Machina” and “Annihilation” is reuniting with A24 for this latest film. Jessie Buckley is set to play a woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband. Not much else is known about the film. Regardless, out of the few screening reactions gathered, I read “it is one of the most unhinged things I’ve ever seen on screen,” “it’s a modern horror classic,” the film was superb,” “loved it,” “nothing mind-blowing,” “Jessie Buckley killed it” and “Rory Kinnear was something else”....

Regardless, there is absolutely no reason to not anticipate a new work from Farhadi, and earlier in the year Deadline mentioned something was coming much sooner than previously thought. The two-time Oscar winner was heading into production on a new film titled “A Hero” which had its eyes set for a Cannes 2021 bow. Despite a few delays due to the pandemic shutting down productions in Iran, according to stillacwap (who hails from Tehran) over at Awards Worthy, Farhadi has actually completed principal photography on “A Hero”: “The shooting of ‘A Hero,’ the latest work of two-time Oscar winner director Asghar Farhadi, ended in Iranian city of Shiraz....

The company has been criticized with not really having had female filmmakers direct its horror-centered films. Blum was grilled the other day about this subject in an interview with Polygon. Why doesn’t he have more women filmmakers working for him? The answer, according to Blum, is rather simple, there just aren’t that many: “There are not a lot of female directors period, and even less who are inclined to do horror,” Blum continues....

Rudi Dolezal, the director of dozens of classic Queen videos has told the New York Post’s Page Six that the band and its management want a sequel to the Oscar-winning hit Freddie Mercury biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” “I’m sure he plans a sequel that starts with Live Aid.” Dolezal added that the follow-up film is now “being heavily discussed in the Queen family.” Beach also produced “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which has made more than $870 million worldwide....
