Ever since that debut, Cretton has been struggling to find his footing; His 2017 adaptation of “The Glass House” was a dramatically comatose family drama and now he has “Just Mercy,” which has an Oscar-ready December release date and premiered this past September at the Toronto International Film Festival to decent reviews. I wasn’t a fan. Excerpts from my 9.8.19 review: “Just Mercy” doesn’t know what it wants to be....

There was a time when Hollywood would churn out Agatha Christie-inspired whodunits like it was nobody else’s business. You know how it goes, a plot filled with highly suspicious characters, all connected by a mysterious murder, but who among them did the dirty deed? Eventually, this genre got tiresome and clichéd, but in an era of cinema where most big-studio movies aren’t interested in doing adult-oriented dramas, director Rian Johnson has decided to bring it back....

Actress Robin Wright, who previously directed 10 episodes of “House of Cards,” premiered her feature-directing debut “Land” last month at the all-digital Sundance Film Festival. Wright, who also wrote the screenplay, stars as Edee, a grieving woman who moves to the mountains “to get away from people.” She’s still haunted by the tragic deaths of her husband and child and believes that leaving the city life behind will help her healing process....

Directed by Sophie Hyde and written by Katy Brand, it seems as though “Leo Grande,” which got very positive notices at Sundance, is now DOA. At least, when it comes to Oscar. It’ll have to now relegate itself for Emmy contention. “Leo Grande” was bought for $7.5 million by Searchlight back in January, with a clear understanding that Emma Thompson would be campaigned as a Best Actress contender next year....

THR likes it, so does The Guardian’s Adrian Horton. Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson, The Wrap’s Ross Lincoln and Variety’s Owen Gleiberman are mixed to positive. Paste Magazine, The Daily Beast, Slash Film are negative. Many of these reviews just can’t help but compare it to “Spotlight.” Is that what we’re going to do now after every journalism-based film gets released? Forcibly mention and compare to “Spotlight”? It used to be that “All the Presidents Men” was the go-to point of reference....

Machoian’s film absolutely deserves a review ASAP. This was a taut, tense, and terrific noir about infidelity and rage. It’s the kind of film that used to be what independent filmmaking was all about back in the ’90s, before the big studios ended up snatching the genre away with their slick sublet companies. The film marks the feature debut for writer-director Machoian and he shows the kind of assured and deftly artful hand at directing that only a high-caliber filmmaker could pull off....

“The Lion King” has just finished screening here in Montreal and the end-result is more of a showcase for VFX/photo-realism than an actually successful remake of a beloved Disney classic. Maybe they should have just left the 1994 movie alone. No, not maybe, actually, they should have really just not touched it. This remake’s director Jon Favreau (The Jungle Book, Iron Man, Chef) is so concentrated on the technological aspects of the film that he forgets about the emotional core and, when it comes to the shakespearian-influenced ‘Lion King,’ that is a mistake....

I saw “Tomasso” almost exactly a year ago at Cannes 2019. I thought this personal and, sometimes, very sweet movie was Ferrara’s best work since 1995’s “The Addiction.” The 69-year-old Ferrara has directed over 40 features in his 5-decade career. There have been a lot of misses, but peak Ferrara (“Bad Lieutenant,” “King of New York,” “Ms. 45”) makes the filmmaker well worth following. As seen in the new trailer for “Tommaso,” the plot revolves around an American artist living in Rome with his wife and young daughter....
