Alice Diop’s “Saint Omer” is indeed getting good traction. Its selection by the New York Film Festival has really intrigued me further. It was already a Venice lock a week or two before Cannes announced their lineup. Something about Fremaux waiting too long to choose it and then it just decided to accept Venice’s competition invitation. Jafar Panahi’s “No Bears” is obviously a political statement, but it could also very well be a great movie as well, especially given that Panahi’s filmography is astoundingly impressive....

The folks over at Warner are calling these actions “pre-tax restructuring charges.” You see, they are $3 billion in debt, and their stock is plummeting — what better way to cut losses than to forever shelf completed TV shows and movies. They want to lock these projects up, never to be seen again for tax exemption purposes. It’s an interesting strategy, make movies and never show them again. The write-offs also led to the removal of films such as “An American Pickle” and “Charm City Kings” from HBO Max, among other titles....

French director Eva Husson’s “Girls of the Sun” feels like the kind of political wartime film Hollywood used to churn out almost every year in the ‘80s — you remember, stuff like “Salvador,” and “The Year of Living Dangerously” — movies filled with comradeship, uber-political agendas, humanism and, most importantly, a heroic wartime journalist. Husson seems to be using these films as her blueprint for this all-female version of war....

You can add “Hubie Halloween” to that list of duds. There aren’t many laughs to be found in this latest Happy Madison wanker-fest, unless you find the image of June Squibb wearing a t-shirt that says “boner donor” a total hoot. My issue with the last half a dozen movies from the Netflix Sandlerverse is not necessarily the idiocy of it all, although that doesn’t help. It’s more the feeling that the scripts for these stinkers were all written in a half-assed fashion, by men-children playing it too safe to attract younger audiences....

How bad can it be? Apparently, what Warners saw must have been shockingly bad, otherwise how do you just shelf a $100 million movie. You heard that right, the studio who gave us “Suicide Squad” thinks we’re not worthy to watch this, supposedly, terrible movie. If this doesn’t pique your curiosity for the film … maybe Warner is playing 4D chess to make us badly want to see this film....

I put down a request for a viewing link of the upcoming HBO Max doc right after I noticed that reviews were dropping earlier in the afternoon. My expectations are that I’ll be denied access to the film and will have to watch it when it premieres on the streaming platform at the end of the month. Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Indiewire and the Daily Beast reviews all but confirm that the film definitely pushes the Dylan-and-Mia view of things....

The film is said to have some really unhinged setpieces, showing the debauchery and degeneracy of old Hollywood. We already know it has the potential to go down as a modern masterpiece … if released according to Chazelle’s wishes. Paramount doesn’t really know what to do with the picture, because of the graphic content and the running time (over 3 hours). From the scenes that a source has described to me, I wouldn’t be surprised if it got an NC-17 rating....

Set to the score of ‘20s big band music, the trailer shown felt like one big party, with Margot Robbie’s character even saying, “I just want everyone to party forever.” We see vivid images: an alligator on a leash, illicit drug use, topless women, and Pitt shooting several guns, dancing in his underwear and falling off of a balcony. Today we learned that “She Said” (December 6th), “Bones and All” (December 13th) and “The Banshees of Inisherin” (December 13th) are also VOD bound this month. Curiously, “Glass Onion,” which had a one-week theatrical run, will only be streaming via Netflix on Christmas week. These titles, alongside other Oscar buzzed films already available online (“Till,” “Armageddon Time,” and “TÁR,” “The Woman King”), make it very easy for cinephiles to catch up with all the Oscar contenders....
