Just a few months after the release of “Mank,” it was announced that Fincher was again teaming up with Netflix for a movie. This time it’s “The Killer,” an adaptation of Alexis Nolent’s graphic novel series. ”Seven” screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker is adapting Nolent’s novels and Michael Fassbender has been confirmed as the lead. Cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt — who just won an Oscar for Mank — spoke to El Diario Vasco (via The Fincher Analyst) and confirmed he’ll be reteaming with Fincher on this film....

Controversy erupted last year when the 81-year-old actor was MeToo’ed. However, it seems like the story against Freeman didn’t stick, with even the Screen Actors Guild having considered revoking Freeman’s lifetime achievement award last year, but after careful investigation, deciding not to. Things are starting to look up for the actor as he has now been cast in the much-anticipated sequel for “The Hitman’s Bodyguard.’“ Good for him. I hate to see such a timeless actor being dragged down in the mud like this....

I’ll be watching “McKay’s film later this week. Variety‘s Kris Tapley: “Christian Bale might be in line to receive his second Academy Award to date, for his uncanny portrayal of former Vice President Dick Cheney [and] the film packs an infuriating punch as McKay writes history with lightning yet again. The question [is] whether we’re ready to dissect it all. “Is the movegoing audience — indeed, are Academy voters — ready to take stock of all this chapter in history with [today’s] depressing news glowing up at us from our mobile devices on a daily basis?...

The seven-day event will run from January 28 through February 3, 2021. All the films in the official program will be available to view online in the U.S., with certain selections opting for global availability. Over 70 feature films have been selected. Multiple films will premiere simultaneously roughly every three hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. U.S. Mountain Time. This rollout is designed to preserve the energy of a Festival, with an abundance of choices and collective experiences, as audiences can begin the film simultaneously, and participate in the live Q&A which follows (viewers can also begin films any time within three hours of their premiere’s start)....

All of that seems to have not had the desired negative effect the film’s detractors have been hoping for, with the film’s buzz having picked up some steam lately, with impressive stamina at the box-office and incredible audience scores. By all accounts, “Green Book” is a film that, by the time its release peaks in 3000 or so theaters, will most likely be well-loved by movie fans. However, with all that being said, another controversy has arisen and this one feels more earned....

Tweets are finally emerging about the first press screening for the film and the general consensus seems to be that the film is surprisingly good. Some are even saying it’s the best DCEU movie, although that isn’t much of a stretch considering we have “Wonder Woman” and then … what? Then again, and no disrespect to some of the people tweeting out these positive reactions, but the people Warner Bros....

And so, it’s been 30 years since Murphy’s last standup performance. I’ve been clamoring for him to un-retire, the man had such a gift for performance comedy. My wishes may finally be coming to fruition. TMZ is reporting that Murphy is in talks with Netflix to produce an undetermined number of new standup specials for a $70 million payday (rumor has it that it’ll be a total of three specials)....

Fetching groovy fashion attire, from hat to suit to cane, Murphy’s passion project finally comes to the big screen in the form of Larry Karszewski and Scott Alexander’s screenplay. It’s no coincidence that both writers were also in charge of penning Tim Burton’s best movie, “Ed Wood,” which was also a love letter to making movies. Call this the blaxploitation version of “Ed Wood,” filled with the same deft comic touch, but sadly less of the artistry....

Swift is now, puzzlingly, going to be featured in Variety’s annual Directors on Directors series with filmmaker Martin McDonagh, despite having not directed any feature films (just a music video). Swift was given the spot over many reputed filmmakers. The entire variety lineup this year includes James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola, Ryan Coogler and Sarah Polley. The Variety series has two directors — typically, who’ve both released projects in the past year — given the opportunity to interview one another about their careers....

What You Need To Know: If Edgar Wright’s kinetic, bullet-riddled live-action jukebox stunt “Baby Driver” saw the director riffing on the cinema of Walter Hill and Michael Mann in his own inimitable key (and somehow managing to turn Ansel Elgort into an action-movie star), then “Last Night in Soho” will see the British director tipping his proverbial caps to milestones like Nicolas Roeg’s “Don’t Look Now” and Roman Polanski’s “Repulsion....

“Netflix will grow to 262 million subscriptions within a decade, including 72% of the United States, says Citi Research. That’s a big jump from its current 118 million.” “At a high level, our $305 price target implies that in ten years Netflix has 262 million total subs (representing 72% U.S. penetration, 37% penetration of other developed markets, and 21% penetration of emerging markets ex-China),” say analysts Mark May and Hao Yan....

Separating the art from the artist has become such a hotheaded debate these days, but the fact remains that, for many, the reputations of Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, Kevin Spacey and others has been tarnished these last few years. Ozon refers to German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder as a role model like hardly anyone else, but Fassbinder tormented, humiliated and beat up his actors. His films would no longer be possible today....

In the meantime, Noé has released fantastic movies this year: “Lux Aeterna,” and, most especially, “Vortex.” I liked it because it was dark. That’s one of the few examples of enjoyable movies coming out of Hollywood. I also liked “Arrival” very much, by Denis Villeneuve. That’s the other one. I didn’t want to say “Arrival” because I said it two years ago and everyone said, “Ohh, what? Gaspar Noé likes “Arrival”?...

And so, it is quite surprising to have George Lucas himself quoted as saying that that “[The Phantom Menace] is one of my favorite movies and of course Jar Jar is my favorite character. Ahmed [Best] did a fantastic job, it was very, very hard.” Binks and Best aren’t the only “Phantom Menace” casualties. I’m sure you all remember 10 year-old Jake Lloyd, who played Anakin Skywalker, and his revelation in a 2012 interview that fan backlash led him to quit acting for good....

There had been suspicions for many years that George Lucas may not have been the filmmaking genius that he was. Yes, he started off his career with “THX-1138,” “American Graffiti,” and 1977’s “Star Wars” but the creative juice he may have shown in those films was all but over with the three prequels he wrote and directed in 1999, 2002 and 2005. Lucas’ conception of story is second-to-none, but, as we’ve seen it with his work in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, his directing and writing has always been better handled by the likes of Lawrence Kasdan, Steven Spielberg and especially Irvin Kershner in “The Empire Strikes Back,” still the best SW film ever made....

The mixed response to the film was expected, however, while “Justice League” currently has 37% on Rotten Tomatoes, fans seemed to have liked it. The film’s CinemaScore is a solid B+ and its 7.4 IMDB rating is pretty solid for DCEU flick. Also, “Justice League” has done well in China, with its $51 million debut weekend marking the second highest launch for a Warner Bros. movie after “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice....
