We should also not mix up Scott’s “Napoleon” with Cary Fukunaga’s HBO miniseries … “Napoleon.” Fukunaga’s 6-episode venture is based off of Stanley Kubrick’s legendary unfilmed 1970’s screenplay which was going to star Jack Nicholson as the titular antihero....

The film was test-screened on Tuesday at the AMC Lincoln Square in New York City. A genie romance that will be highly polarizing is what I’m hearing. A $60 million dollar art film. Miller examines contemporary society via the conventions of the folk or fairy tale genre. This is a film about the “impact of storytelling on storytelling,” a sort of “Arabian Nights” for our times. Another person who attended mentioned the “sensuality and eroticism” depicted in the film, and that this was Miller’s most philosophical movie to date, one that might alienate much of the fanbase he built with “Fury Road....

Del Toro has not been shy in expressing his love for Bill Hader’s hitman comedy. It’s one of the very best shows on TV at the moment. Del Toro wrote in 2019: “Barry” follows Hader as hitman Barry Berkman, whose trip to Los Angeles to assassinate someone goes terribly wrong and he, unintentionally, ends up joining an acting class. This inspires him to begin asking questions about his own path in life....

The Oscars we’re originally supposed to not require proof of vaccination, but then, after complaints from attendees and on social media, the Academy switched gears and announced that all nominees and invited guests would need to show proof of vaccination and at least two negative P.C.R. tests in order to attend the awards show in March. Yes, “The Cloverfield Paradox” is bad, really bad. In fact, it’s far and away the worst movie of the “Cloververse” series. After watching this film, the pieces of the puzzle started to fit, everything aligned in a much clearer way … Good God, Netflix had just Punk’d us. The film takes place in 2028, with our planet’s natural resources all but gone and a space station (Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo and Zhang Ziyi) trying to rev up a particle accelerator to produce “unlimited energy....

Surprising? You bet. And not because Bong’s film doesn’t merit the honour, but more so because it had already been screened previously at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the prestigious Palme d’Or back in May. Has this really been that lackluster a fall fest season that a close to five-month-old movie still ended up winning the poll? Coming in at second place in the final tally was Noah Baumbach’s excellent “Marriage Story,” but, oh wait, Taika Waititi’s, supposedly, critically maligned “Jojo Rabbit” finished third?...

When pressed by a Fox Executive, who begged him to make The Way of Water’s 192-minute runtime shorter, Cameron admitted to yelling at him “Get the Fuck out of my office!” The man is fearless. Cameron is now saying, in an interview with GQ, that his upcoming “Avatar: The Way Of Water,” was “Very fucking [expensive],” and “the worst business case in movie history.” According to Cameron, in order to be profitable, ‘The Way of Water’ would have “to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history....

There are plenty of “The Power of the Dog” haters out there, but I find the hate for Campion ridiculous. Her camera placement in the film was genius. It’s very much a “director’s movie” through and through, and Campion carries it with her strong visuals. Her sense of composition could not be matched by the four other nominees and their respective films, maybe with the exception of Paul Thomas Anderson....

Blacklisted in Hollywood these last five years, Depp’s comeback film, post-Heard trial, started shooting last month in Versailles and Paris. Production is set to take up Depp’s entire summer. The actor doesn’t have anything else lined up after this, but here’s hoping he gets more projects in due time. Could you just imagine the Cannes press conference for this one? Despite not being a critical darling, Maïwenn has been a mainstay of the fest for quite a few years now, her last three films (DNA, Mon Roi and Polisse) all screened at the fest....

Last week, the rapper was a guest on the Joe Rogan Experience, West went on a rant about the “Star Wars” franchise. After their big-budgeted movies from Noah Baumbach, Andrew Dominik and Alejandro Gonalez Inarritu’s faltered this year, it’s less investment in art and more investment in junk. Do you blame them? They blew so much cash on “Bardo,” “White Noise” and “Blonde,” with probably none of these films likely to Land Oscar nominations. The ones I’ve highlighted for 2023 are David Fincher’s The Killer, Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, Wes Anderson’s Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge, George C....

For me the transfer from stage to screen is effortless, King’s direction is a beautiful compliment to Powers’ words, as these titans of history lock horns in all manner of conversation. The lightning-quick and riveting exchanges are added even greater depth by the world created by King that sucks you in and spits you out without you even knowing the two hours have gone by. These legends are brought to life by this impeccable cast, each bringing their own skillset, and individuality to their respective roles....

By now you must know how the story goes; A fearless young woman named Fa Mulan tries to prevent her sick father from serving in the Imperial Army, stealing his sword and armor and disguising herself as a man by battling Northern invaders in China. Mulan is played by Liu Yifei, a competent actress who, earlier in the year, caused controversy by voicing discontent towards Hong Kong protesters. This has led to boycott calls of the film....

As mentioned, TÁR’s Todd Field won Best Director. ‘Everything Everywhere’ filmmakers The Daniels did not even get the runner-up spot, instead that went to RRR’s SS Rajamouli. The LAFCA also went gender neutral this year and yet they managed to reward, in all the acting categories a male and a female performance. What was the point of going gender-neutral if you’re just going to chicken out? There was also a nice little Oscar push for acting winners Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness) Cate Blanchett (TÁR), and Bill Nighy (Living)....

Interviewed last week, during the THR podcast, Hamill elaborated on the “missed opportunity” Disney had in reuniting Han, Luke, Leia and Lando: “Everyone talks about the shock of realizing that on ‘Force Awakens’ I don’t come in until the last page,” he said (via Comicbook). “A bigger shock to me was them killing Han Solo before Luke could ever see his best friend again.” He added, “I mean, it might be selfishly motivated, but I said, ‘Holy cow, that’s a real missed opportunity....

According to the detailed synopsis “C’mon C’mon” has a documentary filmmaker (Phoenix) having to care for his young nephew Jesse (Woody Norman) as they both travel across the country doing interviews for a news piece. A special bond develops on the road. I’ve heard mixed-to-positive reactions for “C’mon, C’mon”, which was shot in black & white by DP Robbie Ryan and was test screened in NYC earlier this week. The 11-year-old Norman is getting most of the attention, and, I’m told, overshadows Phoenix for much of the film....
