Those 10-day numbers easily beat former Netflix series “Stranger Things 2” and its 31.2 million viewers, however, “Stranger Things 3” garnered a bit more viewership (36.3 million viewers) and is still the record-holder in that department. Going past the first 10-days and “Tiger King” has assumingly clocked in more than 40 million viewers....

And yet, despite an iconic property, the popular Spielberg and early rave reviews, this coming week-end’s box-office might not be too kind for the film. Adults over the age of 35 in the U.S., especially females, the go-to demo for musicals, remain the most nervous about returning to the multiplex (the emerging omicron variant may not help). [THR] I spoke to a box-office analyst today who gave me the early projections for “West Side Story” and they seem downright depressing....

King’s “Wonka” test-screened over the weekend to positive notices. I’m allowed to post one reaction I gathered: The people over at Jeff Sneider, ViewerAnon and Big Screen Leaks are backing up the positive “Wonka” intel. Feig’s film has just test-screened 15 months before its December 2023 release. In it, Chalamet plays Willy Wonka in yet another spinoff of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”. The big lure for me here is King, who made those two fantastic “Paddington” movies....

Mangold is a solid studio filmmaker, but one wonders if the Indiana Jones series has any juice left in its reservoir. The last good movie in the franchise was “Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade,” which was released almost 31 years ago. Time to move on? Mangold and company clearly don’t believe that to be the case. There was a noble attempt at gaining back the relevance of yore in 2008, but it turned out to be the misbegotten “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull....

According to Variety, Cannes isn’t full-on canceling the event and is currently exploring other possible dates to continue at the end of June until the beginning of July. THR’s Boyd Van Hoeij tweeted earlier today that the dates being considered by the festival are June 23rd to July 10th. That’s 17 days, so maybe that’s just the timeframe they want the 10-day festival to take place in. The thought of Cannes even taking place in late June still seems a tad too unrealistic at the moment, but, who knows, maybe some miracle vaccine or drug will pop out of the woodwork before then....

They’re just gonna keep pushing this movie back every two weeks until it finally comes out in December. Just take it off the 2020 slate until the world is no longer on fire. You can still plan to be the first movie out of the gate, but stop toying with theater chains, who seem to be relying on this film and making plans accordingly for its opening. I’m assuming this is mainly because New York decided not to open their cinemas as early as originally planned, ditto California, which is right now in the midst of a nasty spike in COVID-19 cases....

This is my final day of screenings today, unless I decide to go ahead and watch an 8:30am of Justine Triet’s “Sibyl” tomorrow. On tap are two films with the highest of potential. Abdelatif Kechiche’s “Mektoub: Intermezzo” which is said to be a near four-hour film taking place in dance clubs, which is supposed to have a 25 minute cunnilingus scene and Marco Bellocchio’s “The Traitor,” a Godfather-style Italian epic....

There’s a movement going on in American indie cinema. Baker and the Safdies are creating what I like to call “Gutter Poetry” out of the American middle and lower class. After “Tangerine” and “The Florida Project,” Baker cements his status as one of the best working American directors today with “Red Rocket,” a down-and-dirty ride into the Trumpian American fringes of Texas. It was one of the very best movies I saw at this year’s Cannes Film Festival....
