Are Apple TV thinking of doing a surprise December launch for this one? I’m skeptical, but anything is possible in this unpredictable movie year. I was told a few months back that a summer 2023 release was being eyed for Scott’s epic. Regardless, what we have here is confirmation that Scott has a cut ready to go, whether it’s the final cut remains to be seen. “Napoleon” started shooting in February and wrapped production on May 17th in Malta....

Despite my mixed take, I was under the impression that it was well-received by TIFF audiences. Critics had their daggers ready for this film, but more than a few Toronto and Telluride moviegoers told me they absolutely fell head over heels in love for ‘Empire’. It does feature gorgeous photography from Roger Deakins, who is a total rock star. However, I am not entirely sure what the point of “Empire of Light” was, other than to give Olivia Colman a major showcase, show how bigoted the 1980s were in the UK and to set the film in a movie theatre....

Lee also wanted to reward Catherine Corsini’s “La Fracture.” How the jury decided on Julia Ducournau’s “Titane” remains a total mystery to this day, but it does look as though it was a compromise pick by the jury — they all either liked or loved it, so they gave it the top prize....

Whilst there is significant praise for Robbie’s commitment to the whacky and wonderful nature of the character, a huge amount of praise has been fished out to how the film apparently leans heavily into its R-rating. In fact “John Wick” helmer Chad Stahelski was brought in to work on the films fight scenes. And if these reactions are anything to go by it appears to have payed off. As much as you have to take early reactions with a pinch of salt, this is extremely positive for Warner Bros, considering some of the DC disasters they’ve brought to the screen in the last 10 years....

Benedict Cumberbatch, “The Power of the Dog” Rose and her son Peter (Kodi Smit- McPhee) arrive at the ranch, but are clearly not welcomed by Phil, continually abrasive and macho, he feels a certain unspoken jealousy towards his brother. the latter delivers a towering performance as a cowboy hiding behind a costumed toxic masculinity. He mocks the overtly sensitive Peter, but his cruelty and violence hides deeper nuances behind the shield; a repressive nature that can only come in not feeling comfortable in one’s own skin....

You won’t find that film, nor Top Gun: Maverick (#3) on my best of 2022 list. Au contraire, I find that the more the quality of studio filmmaking diminishes, now on a yearly basis, the more foreign-language cinema takes over as the very best film has to offer. Hollywood is in very dire straits right now, if the most critically-acclaimed major studio flick released is a sequel to “Top Gun” then we’re in trouble....

All P&I screenings will be digital. That being said, the in-person portion of the festival (if it happens) will only take place during the first five days, with social-distancing measures in place. Various sections, such as Wavelengths and Midnight Madness, will still be happening.A number of “Cannes 2020” labeled films are still waiting to see if they were accepted to TIFF, and that makes sense now, with such a limited number of slots....

The vibe itself was morose. Press and industry presence was very scant, and I’ve spoken to many who regretted not attending Telluride or Venice instead. The world premieres have also been slim pickings. The big one, “Belfast,” was stolen, at the very last minute by Telluride, and what we were left with were rather mediocre “buzz” titles such as “Dear Evan Hansen,” “The Starling,” and “The Forgiven.” Even worse, there were a bunch of Telluride/Venice titles missing in Toronto such as Pedro Almodóvar’s “Parallel Mothers,” Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter,” Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Hand of God,” Marcus Reinaldo Green’s “King Richard” and Mike Mills’ “C’mon C’mon....

TIFF is set to kick off on September 9th with 10 days of screenings, and over 100 films in its Official Selection. The first 12 titles of the lineup were announced today, most notably Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” and Edgar Wright’s “Last Night in Soho.” The press and industry screening platform launched last year will remain in place. “This will be a part of the festival going forward,” TIFF director Cameron Bailey told IndieWire....
