The following month, Variety officially confirmed Bong’s next film, which the trade said would also star Robert Pattinson and be an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s upcoming novel, “Mickey 7.” Then on 05.13.22, we heard that production on “Mickey 7” was set to commence in the UK, with the months of August to December booked for shooting. That’s five months for Bong to get his movie ready for Cannes ‘23. Now, it’s official....
Of course, Netflix got into the game as well by purchasing and streaming “Extremely Vile, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” “I Am Mother,” and “Velvet Buzzsaw.” None of those turned out to be highlights of the movie year. Variety’s Rebecca Rubin tackles the failures to ignite of these and other big-money sold titles, but she can’t quite bring herself to admit that it’s more than just about the quality of these films....
Regardless, after six months of absence, they reformed, some of the writers came back, others left for good, and they managed to even squeeze in their annual tradition of producing the most eclectic top 10 around. This year’s Cahiers list of the best films of 2021 is topped by Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow.” Notice how the two French films that won Cannes (“Titane”) and Venice (“Happening”) are absent. Of course, given the French nature of the publication, a whopping six films from the Cannes Film Festival made the list including the likes of Verhoeven, Dumont, Carax and Weerasethakul....
Burton’s 2010 adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” earned over $1 billion at the global box office. It also cemented his 21st-century reputation as the go-to-director for classic children’s fantasy. That’s his thing now: “Alice,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” and the upcoming “Dumbo.” At least the trailer for “Dumbo” looks great and feels like a Tim Burton movie, which can’t be said about the other aforementioned films he’s directed the past few years....
Lynch’s surreal neo-noir bested Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood” (#2) by just 3 votes. Almost 2/3 of the poll’s participants were American. Established publications, including Variety, The New York Times, The L.A. Times, USA Today, Film Comment, The Wall Street Journal and Vanity Fair, participated in the poll. Each critic was asked to send their five picks, unranked, for the decade. There were 13 films in the top 30 that were in a foreign language, beating the previous record holder of 10 from our 2010s poll....
The 76-year-old director of such sci-fi classics as “The Fly” and “The Dead Zone” was asked about genre cinema and whether he’d ever want to make another movie dealing with the fantastical— by my account, he hasn’t really delved into science fiction filmmaking since 1999’s “Existenz”. Cronenberg didn’t brush off the possibility, but added that, if he were to ever go back to sci-fi, it for sure wouldn’t be in the form of a superhero movie....
Lynch’s “Dune” is well-known to be one of the worst flops in Hollywood history and one of the worst studio movies ever made. It’s almost unwatchable. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to sit through its entire 137 minutes. I’ve tried, because I’m a Lynch completist, but good God is it bad. Widely panned at the time, Lynch lost total creative control on the project, so much so that he asked the studio to remove his name from it entirely, sadly, his wish wasn’t granted....

It’s always the same names who tweet out these glowing tweets, critics who will eat up just about anything out of the sheer excitement of being at the world premiere. And, know what? The film media eats it up as well. A narrative gets built up free of charge for Disney. It’s all part of the Disney/Marvel propaganda machine. Don’t get me wrong, it might be a good movie, but people hopping on-board this one purely based on tweet reactions is misguided....

I am absolutely confident in my assessment that Sian Heder’s “CODA” is one of the five current locks. Despite its summer release, the film has had plenty of legs, maintaining buzz with general audiences who have been discovering it on Apple TV, and not to mention its well received Academy screenings throughout the fall. It would be foolish to even guess what the remaining five slots would be composed of, especially when “Licorice Pizza,” “Nightmare Alley,” “Don’t Look Up,” “West Side Story,” and “Being the Ricardos” still haven’t really been seen....
“The fact is I’ve been dreaming of doing a ‘Frankenstein’ movie since I was a child,” Del Toro told ComingSoon back in 2008. His dream might soon be realized as production on del Toro’s “Frankenstein” is set to start in June 2023. Netflix struck an overall deal with Del Toro back in August 2020. In recent days, the filmmaker has teased one of his upcoming projects will be a monster movie....

If only TIFF had warned us earlier then maybe more journalists would have have had the time to plan out their trips to Toronto for this coming September’s event. Alas, many are justifiably irked by this communication breakdown and are now scrambling to book flight and hotels....
IndieWire used to conduct such a poll, and then they just stopped doing it. I stepped inand took over in 2016. The first few were in tandem with Sasha Stone’s Awards Daily and then in 2019 it was exclusively a World of Reel thing. This is the 7th year for the poll. Results will be posted sometime next week. As far as my tastes go, the best films released in US theatres, between the months of January and June, have been (in no particular order): Audrey Diwan’s “Happening,” Gaspar Noe’s “Vortex,” David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future,” Justin Kurzel’s “Nitram,” Richard Linklater’s “Apollo 10 1/2,” Michel Franco’s “Sundown,” Steven Soderbergh’s “Kimi,” Chloe Okuno’s “Watcher,” Daniel Roher’s “Navalny” I’m now wondering what the community of readers here would choose as their best films of the mid-year....
I honestly didn’t think too much about the reason for his decision, the person that told me the news. in early Spring, had mentioned that Cooper was just tired and wanted to move on. Fair enough. Max Von Sydow’s legacy & nine-decade body of work is incomparable. He was one of the last living actors who could make the claim of having acted in 11 Ingmar Bergman movies. The Academy never giving him an honorary Oscar, after having multiple opportunities, is truly inexcusable. His career, spanning an incredible nine decades, and films with Bergman, George Stevens, John Huston, David Lynch, Woody Allen, Lars von Trier, Spielberg, and Scorsese....
“Knock at the Cabin,” which began shooting on April 20th, was rumoured to be a thriller. Further plot details had been kept under wraps since then. The film stars Dave Bautista, Rupert Grint and Nikki Amuka-Bird.z Like all Shyamalans, Universal and the filmmaker want plot details to remain a secret. However, there are clues online which led to me to a person who revealed to me the gist of the storyline, and it sounds like something Shyamalan could, ahem, knock out of the park....
What ”American Skin” needed most to survive were positive notices from the American press. And yet, the reviews out of Venice for “American Skin” were not good. The comeback Parker wanted to mount had to wait, as the film’s U.S. theatrical release was in question. Would we have to wait years, if ever, before we could actually catch “American Skin”?
